Depending on budget, perhaps a Canon SX620HS ($250.00) or maybe a used Olympus TG5 tough camera (about $275.00 used). The TG6 would be great as well. I would lean toward the Olympus tough cameras, because of durability. These cameras will produce great pictures, will help her develop an eye for photography, and are cheaper than a smart phone. At 8 years old, I would highly recommend you or the parents keep the camera in a safe place, and have her ask to use it. Otherwise, even a TG5 could end up lost or broken. I have a 7 1/2 year old granddaughter, and am confident that an 8 year old would need guidance and some general supervision to make sure the camera lasts. My granddaughter has shown an interest, and uses her mom's cell phone, with permission to take pictures. This works for now, because it is monitored by mom. She is very artistic and I expect her interest in photography to grow. Of course, She happens to have a dad, uncle and grandfather (me) who are into photography and have semi-pro to pro camera equipment. She is nowhere near ready for that. The person who suggested a DSLR for an eight year old, clearly isn't around young kids much.

We care because she asked for a lens recommendation. If you recommend the two best she has 24-70 and 70-200 then her widest point of view would be 36mm on a DX body.

I get it. But that’s not a good reason for the person to make a snarky remark about taking a point and shoot. Just ask which camera she has. Some had recommended that she also take the 18-270. The fact she has that lens is also a clue that she might have a DX camera. She had mentioned her D7200 in a previous post.

I'm taking a wild guess: a Nikon FX DSLR.

In another post, the OP said she has a Nikon D7200.

My comment is based upon the pertinent information the OP has refused to provide. Please think about it.

Take a look at the quality of photos on her Flickr page and reconsider making such a silly suggestion. Who cares that she didn't mention her exact camera. It is obviously a Nikon DSLR.

Just bought a new Canon - EOS Rebel T7i DSLR Two Lens Kit with 18-55mm (f4) and 55-250mm Lenses - Black for $700. from Best Buy as an upgrade over my (10+) year old
Canon - EOS Rebel T2i DSLR Two Lens Kit with 18-135mm (f3.5) and 55-250mm Lenses - Black. Not rich got to take what my banker says I can afford. Now question I have do you see any reason to keep the T2i? Should I Keep the 18-135mm zoom and sell the 18-55mm? Getting pressured to sell T2i by my banker to mitigate the cost of the new camera. Opinions would be appreciated. Thanks

If you now have two 55-250mm lenses, by all means sell one of them. The 18-135 is a very useful lens, you'll want to keep it. Even though the 18-55mm covers a focal length included in the 18-135, sometimes it is nice to have a shorter/lighter lens on the camera. It won't net much by selling it. I have an 18-55mm, and don't use it a lot, but it is nice to have for certain applications. I would keep it for versatility. The T2i camera won't sell for much, but might be nice to have as a backup. Congrats on your new T7i, enjoy!

With a comment like that I'm guessing you've never been to Maui!

As always, it depends on your personal interests. Hawaii has some incredible birds, so if it were me I wouldn't go without the 150~600. Incredible flowers so the macro. Then the 18~270 and you would have everything covered. JMHO

Having been to Maui, I agree with these choices.

Im a bit amused by all the talk of weight. The differance in weight between the 77 and 80 or 90 is only about 2.5 oz.
Really 2.5 oz matters? I normally hang a 3.5 lbs lens off a camera body, 2.5 oz? A iphone 11 weighs almost 8 oz. If 2.5 oz matters yhat much we seriously need exersize.

Handle both the cameras, and you'll see the difference. If weight and size is no concern, go with the system you prefer. Whether that's the 80D or 90D. With so many switching to mirrorless, one of the primary factors seems to be bulk of the camera and weight of a DSLR plus a good lens. If a person is walking all day with a camera and lens, size and weight usually matter (even small differences in weight can make a big difference) For some, it is not an issue.

There are always interesting comments about the 77D vs. the 80D. I have a 77D and chose it specifically because of the lighter weight and size. Yes, many of the 80D specs are slightly better. However, I have found in real world use, 77D owners LOVE this camera and for good reason. The processor in the 77D is significantly superior to the processor in the 80D. Focus is incredibly fast, camera handles well and pictures are sharp. The T7i has different controls, though the body size is similar, but NOT identical. I find that those who haven't used a 77D often downplay it. those who have it, love it in every way. I find it interesting that the reviews for the 77D are consistently better than the 80D, though they both rate well. If I were to trade for an 80D, in my opinion, I would be trading down. Specs don't tell the whole story. If you can rent both and then decide, that would be a great option. There is probably no better value in a quality DSLR right now than the 77D. You would not be disappointed. I am interested in checking out the new 90D with its more advanced capabilities. However, If i buy a 90D, I will not under any circumstances part with my amazing light weight, fast focusing 77D. If you absolutely need weather sealing, I would skip the 80D and go to the 90D.
