I only hear the clicking noise when VR is on and it happens when VR engages and disengages. It’s not loud, but it’s there. I have found similar noises with other zoom lenses, but wanted to find out whether it’s normal for a higher end prime. From feedback it’s seems it is.

Thank you. It does seem an amazing lens. I also have the 300pF, but the 500 seems even sharper. Great pic.

It’s new. I suppose I’m conscious of it so I hear it, but can’t say it’s loud. Just a click when auto focus engages and the same when it disengages. It seems to work okay, but I have never used a 500pf before so I’ve nothing to judge it by. AF speed seems good, but not instant when I move around.

I have just received a Nikon 500 PF lens and have noticed a clicking noise when VR engages and disengages. I have noticed this on some other Nikon lenses, but wondered if anyone else experiences it on the 500 PF. It’s a fairly expensive lens so want to make sure it’s a normal part of the VR operation.

I have started shooting raw files as well as jpegs on my D500. I was hoping to play around with some processing using the free Nikon raw file viewer to see how I get on before taking the plunge and buying more advanced processing software. However, I have fallen at the first hurdle as I can’t get the NEF format fils to load for editing. What am I doing wrong?

Forgive me, but can a DSLR camera also be mirrorless as your post says DSLR & mirrorless?

I agree with CaptainBobBrown 300pf and 500pf are a great combo for birds. Both take a 1.4tc so you get 300,420,500 and 700mm. Ticks most boxes for me and all light to carry.

I do agree that the quality of mirrorless images is excellent, but I am still yet to be convinced that there is a mirrorless camera that can capture a fast moving bif as well as a good quality DSLR. Therefore as someone who likes wildlife photography a DSLR wins every time.

I have Toshiba and WD hard drives. The Toshiba is over a year old and the WD Osvaldo fairly new. So far the Toshiba has been fine(fingers crossed). However, I do have one question. Is it better to shut the hard drive down after each use or keep it running. I know that external drives are prone to failure and it would be helpful to know if there is any increased risk of failure with continually shutting down or keeping the drive connected to my computer.

Does anyone know if it is okay to try a Nikon TC on a Tamron 70-200 G1(not the newer G2) lens? May sound silly, I don’t want to try and fit it and damaged the contacts or something else.

The D500 is a fantastic camera. I don’t believe that Nikon will produce an upgrade as the move seems to be to mirrorless. I would get a D500 while you can. You won’t regret it.
