Hello Hoggers

I’m new to digital photography. Is sharpening recommended for images shot in RAW format? Is there any reason to shoot in RAW and JPEG?

Thanks

I dare say that RAW never gives you an acceptably finished image. I have only had one RAW image I thought was acceptable in five years of shooting.

Sharpening can be overdone. I little goes a long way.

I used to shoot RAW + JPEG simply because I wanted images to show up in the Windows directory listings. Now I have a RAW to JPEG converter program that converts every RAW to JPEG. So, I don't really need to shoot RAW + JPEG.

And RAW is really needed for conversion to Black and White from color.

This was on Facebook and I feel it probably is a YouTube video. The problem is it can't be viewed unless your on Facebook. Anybody know how to find out if it is on YouTube and how to download the link if it is. I would like to send it to someone but they don't have Facebook.

You can use a program called Faststone Capture. I paid $20 for it several years ago. Anything shown on your computer screen can be captured whether stills or video. You can record the video from Facebook. Then you will have an independent version.

I have seen some beautiful black and white photos on this site. I have only been able to get grey and white with my Rebel T6i set to monochrome and my 18 to 135 lens.
How can I get better black and white images? Should I be taking pictures in color and then converting to B&W? I have both Picasa (that I still use) and Luminar 3 which I don't know very well. Attached is an example.
Appreciate any good comments, but flames to dev/null.

In either case, you should be shooting in color. I believe you have then a choice of six different colors to lighten or darken as you see fit. Your photo is not in focus, so that might help a little. It would also help if you knew the ZONE system as proposed by Ansel Adams. The tree bark in your photo may not have pixels from zone 1 to zone 8. All the tones may be from zone 3 to zone 7, which will not be very much contrast.

90% of the time I shot in manual with auto ISO. I always take a test shot of subject, look at histogram and make adjustments with aperture and shutter speed. Yesterday in LR I was making adjustments to a photograph I stood in the middle of a cloudy day and noticed ISO was went to 2500. Seems really high. Should I do more in manual ISO?

No. Depending on the camera you have, ISO 2500 is of no concern. Why don't you test your camera at high ISOs to see at what ISO you start to get objectionable noise? I have shot with the Nikon D850 at 10,000 ISO in a church with only a very slight amount of noise. I have shot with only firepit light at night without OBJECTIONABLE noise. I believe the ISO went to 256,000.

Again, with modern cameras, 2500 ISO would only be of concern to commercial photographers.

Do your tests to see if it is a concern.

Has anybody tried Altura flash . Considering buying a flash for my Nikon camera.
Any good or bad reviews would help. Still got some time before I buy something.

Yes, I've have a couple of them. The only problem is that they don't do High-Speed Sync. They are easy to use. They do have the S1 and S2 modes. And the flash head zooms according to your lens focal length.
I really like them, but I prefer the Yongnuo 685.

What the hell were you thinking? Nice lighting, but other than that, a waste of time. The most unnatural of poses I have ever seen. Could you do something artistic?

You wanted feedback!

I think the composite is great, but a little too dark for me. I would have preferred the color photo with some clouds that were not so ominous.

"I think as long as it's not passed off by the photographer as a "real" photo, then who should care if it ends up being something nice to look at!"...

I wish our club would take that kind of photo, but they only allow minor corrections in post-processing. For non-contest submissions, composites are great.

Actually, Adorama is selling new F6s. They are on backorder.

Did you read the recall notice?

You might want to so YOU don't jump to a knee-jerk reaction!!!

Although the camera will do HDR, I prefer to use three or five shots set at 1 to 2 - or + EV. I set the shutter for Continuous High, then rattle off those 3 or 5 shots in rapid succession. Takes only 1/2 sec to rattle off 5 shots.
Must be in Manual or Aperture Priority mode. Practice with 3 shots at plus or minus 2 EV, and adjust accordingly.

I recently shot some pictures in a church with white balance set at Auto, Normal. The pictures had a orange tint that didn't change even when switching to other WB settings. I have another project coming up in the same church and would like to eliminate the orange cast all together. Any help would be much appreciated.

You can set the color temperature lower to say, 3400 K. Or just do a custom white balance. It takes less than 30 seconds to do it once you learn how. One way to get the correct white balance is to just shoot your hand (with the camera, not a gun) and see if it looks natural. As long as something white looks white, you are all set.

Most people are idiots. Maybe you have to insult them. Masks and social distancing should be mandated by the government. The older people get it, but younger generations will not let anyone interfere with their lifestyle.

Yes. The sides are leaning into the frame. You should edit with the Perspective control and straighten vertical lines. Actually looks weird. Looks like the church is haunted!. A few minutes with Photoshop or Affinity Photo will make the picture look right.

I'm not sure about the pictures being appropriate here. My thought was that I would love to see some of the beautiful models photographed her also with dress, after seeing them nude. Here goes my lady teasing in one picture, looking classy in another, being part of nature in a third, and posing in her college cheerleader outfit.

They are appropriate as far as I am concerned. I love this woman!

Good Evening All,

My gear consists of a D500, a 200-500 Nikon Zoom and an SB-600. I’m considering exploring fill-in flash for selected bird photography situations (BTW, never with nocturnal birds nor those nesting).

I’ve read in several places to adjust flash exposure compensation to -2 for I presume an adequately powered flash. But I believe the SB-600 is underpowered for this equipment configuration (would love to learn I’m wrong in this regard).
I also know that the max tele setting on the SB-600 is 85 mm.

Other than simply trying different settings, is there any way to guestimate the max working distance of the flash at a particular flash compensation setting on the longer lens.

Apologies if this is actually apples and oranges or I completely misunderstand how and when to adjust settings.

TY

Good Evening All, br br My gear consists of a D50... (show quote)

Yes, you can take the guide number of the flash in feet and divide it by the distance you are from the subject and that will give you the F-stop for what the flash thinks is the proper exposure. Go down 2 stops from there. AT ISO 200, the SB-600 has a GN of 138 feet. So if the distance is 10 feet away from the bird, you would set your F stop on 13.8 ideally which is about f11 2/3. So two stops lower would be about f22 2/3.

I think my calculations are correct. Anyway, you can can fairly close to what you want by using the GN/distance to get the initial F stop.
