I don't expect my 18-400 to do everything all of the time . . . Just "most" of the time . . . I have the super-Tele and the super-wide for specific uses . . . But for a usefull "most" of the time and walkabout lens . . . The 18-400 is very good . . .

The Tamron 18-270 was my main lens . . . Like you I wished for a little more reach . . . So I got a Tamron 18-400 a couple of months ago and it's just as good as the 18-270 was . . . If you liked your 18-270, you'll like your 18-400 as well . . .

I have a little nylon case on one side of my camera strap. I can't remember what it's original use was, but my battery just fits in it, so I sewed it to the strap. On the other side of the strap, I have a small nylon case that holds 3 SD cards, that I also affixed to the strap . . .

I upgraded from the D5500 to the D500. I considered going with a D7200 or D7500, but I'm glad I waited and saved more pennies for the D500. If it was me . . . I'd save and maybe sell something so I could get the D500. Save more money and get the D500 . . . Anything less will disappoint in some areas . . .

I have a D500 and love it. If I decide to go with a full frame camera, I'll be saving up for a D850 because it has many of the same features, controls and ergonomics as the D500 & D5.

I've put arca Swiss type heads on all my tripods(3) and monopod . . . The monopod has a tilt head and the tripods have ball heads. All my equipment has arca Swiss plates attached. I even have arca Swiss plates on my 2 speedlights so I can use a tripod as a light stand. The heavy duty tripod has a large ball head to accommodate my Wimberley Sidekick.

I like my Wimberley Sidekick. It allows me to use my Tamron 150-600 with ease, and if I want to switch to another smaller camera/lense combo it's very easy to take it off and use the tripod's ball head.

I have a D500 and love it . . . As soon as the Prize Patrol stops by, I'll be getting a D850 also . . .

I got a D3300 a couple of years ago and was satisfied, but upgraded to a D5500 because of it's additional features, especially the articulating touch screen. I thought I was happy until I held a D500 at my local camera shop . . . I had to have it, so I saved up and got it. Best move I ever made in my photography, the D500 beats everything out there in the cropped framed cameras. The camera is outstanding. . . . SO . . . Having learned my lesson . . . If I decide to go full frame, I'm not making any intermediate stops . . . I'm going with the D850 . . . It's the full frame version of the D500. GO FOR IT . . .

I have this lens . . . Replaced my Tamron 18-270 with the 18-400 . . . Both are great lenses . . .

I replaced my kit lenses with a Tamron 18-270 a couple of years ago and it has been used 95% of the time. I liked it so well that I bought the Tamron 18-400 as soon as it was released . . . For travel I take this lens along with a super-wide 11-16, and have everything covered . . . I've heard the 16-300 is an excellent lens also . . .

An FX lens will work best on both FX and DX bodies . . . But for what you're looking for, it will be pretty pricey . . .

Yes, I saw the pre-release announcement for the Tamron 18-400mm and it also peaked my interest. Sometimes there are just too many choices, but I guess that's what keeps life interesting. Now that I'm retired, my wife and I are spending MORE time watching our grandchildren play sports, etc, so it would be nice to be able to switch from short to long lens without having to carry two cameras or several lens. Thanks for your helpful response.

When I travel, I take my Nikon D500, Tamron 18-400, Tokina 11-16, and a travel tripod . . . Pretty much covers everything I need . . .
