I admit this is a bit of GAS for the Tamron 18-400. My primary lens is the Tamron 18-270 which is only switched for macro shots with a Sigma 105 macro. I have long wanted greater reach than the 18-270 and I think the 18-400 is a better choice over one of the 150-600 mm offerings. I have done quite a bit of research and have a couple of questions:
1. I understand that it is upgradable by USB connection to my computer. Is this directly to the computer or through an interface?
2. With the holiday sales approaching, what is the likely hood of a substantial discount or discount?
Thanks in advance for your answers/opinions.

There is a USB type dock that allows you to change the lens' firmware settings. But why? In all the years I have been shooting, both film and digital, I never felt I needed to change lens settings. Unless you like to tinker with things, then you run the risk of hosing the lens' performance.

The Tamron 18-270 was my main lens . . . Like you I wished for a little more reach . . . So I got a Tamron 18-400 a couple of months ago and it's just as good as the 18-270 was . . . If you liked your 18-270, you'll like your 18-400 as well . . .

Thanks for the recommendation. I will use it with a Nikon D7100 and maybe occasionally with a D5000.

I got my 18-400 last week and am very impressed by both its reach and sharpness.

Thanks, I have seen many good comments on the 18-400, ?I am trying to get a sense of whether waiting for a discount/rebate is worth it.

It is selling like hot cakes at the moment. If anything, after Thanksgiving, a lot of online retailers will have no tax sales.
Very pleased on a recent Yellowstone trip!

Considering how well it is selling, you are more likely to see Michael Jackson with a 60 year old woman than a discount on that lens.

I second this. I traded my Nikon 18-200 in to Adarama and bought a new Tamron 18-400. Very well made and seems sharp plus I have not noticed vignetting.

Bill, this is a new listing for Tamron. I doubt it will be discounted much at all for Christmas, Tamron is counting on GAS for SALES.
The reviews from B&H have been favorable.

As often as this lens has been mentioned lately on this forum, I see this lens to be selling like hotcakes. Especially with the upcoming holidays approaching in the next few weeks. $649 is an affordable price for this lens. This lens, designed for crop sensor cameras, is a great choice for a take only one lens photographer.
Anyone have an idea when the Canon mount version will be released?
