ne time you definitely want to use Manual mode is for a panarama shot. You don't want the ex;osure bouncing as the camera pans across varying light conditions. So, take an auto mode scan of the scene and note the exposures as you scan. Decide from what the camera saw what exposure you will want for the entire scene and set that manually.
Also, sometimes when you want to minimize release delay time for an action shot, the camera will not have to stop to calculate distance and exposure before releasing the shutter. You did that for the camera.
Good luck!
Go to your room!

Noise reduction is big...especially if U want to enlarge
I understand, Bob, and agree. I did not notice the color noise and wasn't looking for it then, given that it was shot in bright sunlight, D70 f4.5 @ 1/60 ISO not included in the EXIF but probably 200 as that was my usual settings under those conditions. Now, between the D700 and PS ACR 6.5 I'm seldom plagued with noise that can't be easily handled.
Thanks for the edit. Your 'fill flash' really put the pop in the shot!

Howdo, Jon! Thanks for the response.
We're getting into esthetics here so the discussion could get petty broad. I liked the feel of the tree. For me, it emphasized winter and the cold. I felt the tree somehow made him still more isolated and perhaps startled by what he is looking at.
I was relating to an Ambrose Bierce Civil War story wherein a Union scout crept up on a Confederate picket and recognized him as his brother. They both stared at one another and the Union scout slipped away without a word between them.
Good eye, Bob, and great execution!
This attempt at the sentinel was also elusive.
I waited for a morning mist on a cold autumn dawn.
I wanted to suggest the loneliness, the chill, the dread of the guard post at early dawn.
This photo was the lead photo in my slide show for our Memorial Day Service in church and served as the projected backdrop for the recital of "In Flanders Fields."
Dawn Sentinel
My granddaughter, age six, will do just about anything to get attention.
It took me a year to get the shot I wanted of The Sentinel: Proper season, proper day, proper time of day, proper wind proper position of both flags, proper camer settings on the D700.
I went back many times. Could not get everything to come together as I wanted.

Can U send the picture U want to use to Your computer....Then U would be in business
The photo is on the computer and has been uploaded as the avatar for the desktop account, patw28@frontiernet.net
However, I want it on my iPad account, patw28@gmail.com
which is the account I more commonly use for uglyhedgehog.
Right! Sorry about that!
However, I could not upload any photo or avatar from my iPad. (You cannot go to Browse and come back.)
Is there a way to copy this avatar to my patw28@gmail account which is where I do almost all my viewing?
Thanks, and -- again -- I'm embarassed and sorry for the needless bother.

Actually, what I want to do is provide an avatar for my iPad account, patw28@gmaill.com
Apparently I cannot upload a photo from the iPad.
Can I somehow copy my avatar on this desktop account to my iPad account?
Thanks
How do I upload an avatar for my posts?
Thanks! . . . . patrick28
