Gotta love technology :)

I have seen a bridge built here in Calgary with what is called an "incrementally launched" technique, where new segments of the bridge are cast onto the back end and then the whole bridge is pushed ahead by one segment length using dual axis hydraulic jacks and another segment is cast, and so on. The leading end of the bridge, at various times, is left hanging out as a cantilever until it reaches the next column/pier (all of which are installed ahead of time).

I have been out shooting at -25 to -30 Celsius (approx. -5 to -20 Fahrenheit) with no condensation issues when returning ... I pack gear back into my camera bag just before heading indoors, zip the bag closed, and don't re-open inside until it has had time to slowly warm up. Might not be as effective if you have a bag that does not close tightly (e.g., with only Velcro closures?).

Agree with others on batteries ... expect reduced usage because of the cold, and keep a spare or two in an inside pocket. As for cold hands, I do like the outer glove with liners approach, keeping just the liners on while actively shooting and slipping the outers on in between. I also have some very thin gloves I found that are geared for people who run in the cold ... there are thin enough to keep on while shooting but still comfortable temperature-wise.

As several have noted, no Henry's here in Calgary ... I wish there was! (no McBain Camera either ... another one I like). Just about everything I own, photography-wise, has been purchased at Saneal Camera, with 3 locations in/near Calgary so I would highly recommend them.

Excellent ... good to see idiots get what they deserve. Hopefully he gets more than a slap on the wrist!

Thanks John ... definitely going on my list too :)

(looks like it should be good weather for the parade on Friday ... I am so glad my kids are grown and I don't have to go down and camp out on the parade route at 5 a.m. to get a good viewing spot!)

I have seen golfers out on the Banff Springs course looking for their ball in the midst of elk loitering on the fairways, and even one guy using his club to try and retrieve his ball away from an elk lying on the grass (the ball was only a few inches away from the elk). One of those moments that you stop and watch just in case it turns into something interesting :)

Makes two things come to mind:

1) Some people have too much time on their hands!

2) Audi should get this guy to do a commercial for them ... just need to end with the four rings lined up perfectly :)

Think of it this way, probably everyone of those warnings was added after that company or someone in their industry was sued by someone who did just what they are warning against.

Exactly what I was thinking. We have a bridge here with signs along the side that say "do not jump over handrail" ... apparently these arose out of a situation many years back when somebody did jump over (and presumably blamed someone for not having told him it was a bad idea).

Good point on the drink ... I only ran through the stuff that stays in the vehicle much of the winter, and anything drink-wise would be frozen solid. As a minimum we take along water on each trip, though the Thermos full of hot stuff is not a bad idea :)

Good tips ... thanks :) For anyone travelling outside of urban areas in winter conditions, a few extra things have come in handy for me. For each of my vehicles I have a plastic tote box that goes in trunk/hatchback anytime we travel outside of the city in the winter, with the following:

- booster cables ... luckily have not had to use yet on my vehicles, but have been able to help others out several times

- sleeping bag (nice compact one) ... better than a blanket if you are really cold

- couple of chocolate bars

- small fire extinguisher

- bright orange winter hat + reflective safety vest, and a couple of small orange "traffic cones" ... the more visible you are if you have to do stuff like changing a tire, the better

- work gloves

- flashlight

- spare jug of windshield washer fluid

Welcome ... and don't pay too much attention to cheap shots against Nikon!

As an Olympus user (all I have owned since 1978) I have gotten used to just sitting back and watching/listening as the Canon and Nikon folks take shots back and forth, with occasional pot shots directed at anything with less than an APS-C sensor in it (e.g., all of my Olympus stuff). Would be nice sometimes to have a forum like this on which it would be taboo to post what equipment you are using or ask others what they use (except maybe just the basic exposure info ... aperture, shutter speed, ISO and maybe focal length). Let the photos speak for themselves :)
