Think ahead about the shot and select the setting. Including using the "modes" in certain cases.

Biased to shoot exclusively manual as the camera almost never gives me the shot I visualize....same with ETTL flash..

Exceptions:
1) video : F8 - turn off AF and set the ISO.
2) "Must have, no time to think, miss the shot and you will be killed" - Aperature priority, auto ISO with min shutter speed set in camera and then programmed into C1.

For #2 example: backing out of the church snapping the B&G exiting and not adjusting exposure....key first couple shots blown out as soon as we got outside...Flip to C1 and dont worry :-)

On the big island early feb and did the doors off flight over the Kilauea lava flow into the sea. A 300mm ( we used 28/300 and 70/300) did fine. Lots of vibration and 100+ mph air stream outside the door opening would make a longer lens problematic. Pilot only made 3passes each side- maybe 15 sec each- shoot fast! Hell of a view though!

Nice photo @ Can you post the full size and settings? (Looks like a screenshot from your lightroom desktop.)

We spent February on the Big Island and had the opportunity to view the lava flow from the Kalapana side. It is approx 8 miles round trip out to the viewing area. We elected to go with Kalapana Culture Tours. We did the ride and bike which consists of them taking you and the bikes two miles out to gate #2 from there, you ride your bikes the remaining two miles to end and then do a short hike across the Lava to the viewing ropes. When you come back, you call them at gate#2 and they come pick you up. We got there late afternoon and set up our tripods right at the ropes. We ate the dinner we brought and then watched the sunset go down over the Lava fields. Once it got dark, the show began! Here is the link for the tour. You can rent from them right at the parking lot leading to the gate.

Are you going to the Big Island? If so will you be viewing the Lava flow?

I just went up on a half-hour open-window helicopter ride over the Sacramento area. I didn't bring up my Tamron 150-600, but I would recommend against it as my Canon 70-200 was buffeted around when I stuck it out the window, so I found myself using the 24-70 2.8 almost exclusively.

For what you described....Canon 6D !!!!!!
1/2 the price of the 5DIII and better IQ.
...6DmkII is rumoured in a couple of months which will likely result in reduced new and resale price. FF sensors just blow away crop cameras in lowlight. If lowlight is your shooting environment and you want to make larger prints its the way to go. Remember...your current lenses on your T2i will not mount on the 6D if they are EF-S lenses...factor that into your budget (other than the wonderful 50mm 1.8, EF lenses are generally 2x the cost)

I've been shooting Lexar 32GB CF 1066x and SD 1000x cards. But I've been filling them too fast so my next cards will be Lexar 64GB cards.

Exactly the same.
2 64G Lexar 1066 CFs. These are the fastest CFs in the 5DIV. (Google it)

seems like an off handed compliment to me. inotherwords it's "an all round" better camera. but not the best.

Correct. Not the best in any category other than AF. But really really good in every category.

Having dispensed my opinions in several forumns since joining recently, now its my turn to ask for advice. I have a date with an open-door Huey in Hawaii next month and debating on which lens to mount. Wide-angle or 150-600?
...any tips on shooting would be helpful as well. (Anyone with actual experience would be MOST helpful :-)

Nearly every newer digital photographic device - including phones, go-pros, drones etc are capable of taking excellent pictures under 'normal' conditions these days. It is only when you need high ISO, shallow DoF, large prints, high frame rate etc that different cameras, sensors, lenses etc become important. Unfortunately, no system comes with a Composition button. Composition and subject matter has to be provided by the photographer. That is why we all seem to agree 'its not the camera - its the photographer.'

Precisely. Under good lighting and no motion (and you dont care about bokeh etc), smartphone will do the job. Cloudy day/indoor, movement...gonna be tough...

AF is a game changer. Same as the 1DX. Dynamic range is excellent. Good all rounder. Good for sports (7Dii-outdoor, 1DX is better) Good for stills ( mirrorless is better). Good for landscape (5DS/R or Sony mirrorless is better), Good for video (most mirrorless are better).... not the "best" in any category....but the best camera for every situation and I bought one :-)

(When mirrorless achieves the same AF speeds as DSLRs and the electronic lag is gone...I will be tempted to switch....for now, i still shoot weddings and sports and this will do both with professional results)

You will love it....menu system is excellent too

I admit it, I am severely OCD when if comes to memory cards. I always carry a Sony RX100M4 for everyday shooting. One 32 Gb Lexar in the camera and another 32 Gb Lexar in my messenger bag. When I return home, the days shoots are transferred to Lightroom where they are under control of my equally OCD Dropbox based archival system.

With the "big" camera, the Nikon D810, I have 1 32 or 64 Gb card for each days planned shooting. At the end of every day, the images are backed up to a Western Digital My Passport WiFi drive AND synced to Lightroom. If there is a decent enough WiFi connection in wherever I am staying, before the next morning, the days shots are in the bosom of Dropbox. At the end of the trip, after transferring all the RAW images into Lightroom on my main photo-workstation, I reformat the cards used on the trip.

A bit anal retentive, but I've been burned before dealing with memory, USB sticks, HDs, etc.

Technically, BBF usually involves disabling the 1/2 press AF on the shutter button. Wireless Shutter release activates the same process as depressing the shutter button....it will activate the IS on the lens but will not focus if the 1/2 press focus is disabled from the shutter button.
