You are right about SD cards having a finite life but does it really matter? SD cards are cheap and formatting does clean off old files and give you a clean slate. Better than having a corruption problem. So format it every time or don't, whatever you are comfortable with and stop worrying. Take photos and have fun!
I have always used Samsung monitors with great satisfaction. I currently and using a 24.5" Samsung LCD monitor. Super clear and rich colors. Cost me $300 about a year and a half ago. I do not know what they are doing now but my monitor has a 3 year warranty.
Sounds like a quality control issue.
Much thanks to all who answered me ...............
Thanks for the reply. Just had a friend sell me his Sandisk Extreme 16GB Class 10 he was not using anymore for $20. Seems to work fine. Considering Best Buy gets almost $60 I thought it was a nice deal. At 30MB/s it is most likely extreme overkill though as if I remember correctly the D80 can only write at 9.5 MB/s. Bet this card would rock in the D7000! :-o
I have just acquired a like new, low usage, Nikon D80. Can someone tell me what speed class SDHC memory I should get for this camera? The D80 does not do video.
Thanks
Rayford2 is right on the money and I would more believe that news reporting is more interested in $$$ and ratings than the absolute truth.
My Nikon D80 came with a plastic snap on lcd protector and it has been on for the last 4 years. It is getting kind of scratched up looking but the lcd screen is still perfect. B&H sells replacements for $8.99 and they last several years under normal conditions. Even a yearly replacement is still better and cheaper than a damaged lcd screen.
I use something very similar. My device looks like a thumb drive where the SDHC card plugs into the side. Great little USB device and at $2.99 I could not resist. As far as wear goes, I have devices I have removed and inserted SD cards into 100's if not thousands of times with no apparent problems. Unlike CF cards, SD do not have pins to get bent. I keep my device in my camera bag. Picked mine up at Micro Center. Cool and useful little device.
If the pins are only slightly bent and you have a steady hand they can be straightened. I have been working on PC's for 30 years and it is usually not a problem. However if they are bent bad and you do manage to straighten them enough to work they will never be as strong as they once were. In this case, depending on how much you love the camera, the $200 repair may be the best choice as you will get all new pins. Your call!
I recently had a small grey blob show up in the lower right hand corner of my pictures. I blew out the camera with my rocket blower, still there. I cleaned the lens, still there. Finally put the mirror in lockup mode and blew the sensor with my rocket blower. Grey blob is gone. Pictures clean again. I think the best bet is to use a blower, ( NEVER CANNED AIR ), and leave the sensor cleaning only as a last resort. It really is delicate and easily scratched. Each to his own but personally I would have my sensor professionally cleaned if it needed it. They break it, they bought it.
I use the Nikon D80
IMHO
I use the Nikon D80 and have a PNY 4GB Class 4 SDHC card. Seems to work fine although I have been told that I need a class 6 minimum. The Nikon D80 does not do video so I do not see the point.
Any comments?
My Nikon D80 has a removable focus screen. It is a matter of removing the lens, flipping the camera upside down and releasing a metal clip. Once the clip is swung up the focus screen drops out. Reassemble in reverse. As to if I would have the stones to try this is another thing. If you send your camera to the people selling the focus screens they have a service to do it for you. I agree, it would be nice to have an old fashion slr split screen focus on my D80.
Your best bet is keep your $60 and invest in an external USB hard drive for backup. I use two internal hard drives and everything from one drive is mirrored on the other. Carbonite has many complaints and they are not responsible if they lose everything for you. Remember the old saying .... if you want it done right, do it yourself.

Just my two cents. lol
