SDHC Memory, What Class ( Speed )?

I use the Nikon D80 and have a PNY 4GB Class 4 SDHC card. Seems to work fine although I have been told that I need a class 6 minimum. The Nikon D80 does not do video so I do not see the point.

Any comments?

The Class 4 is just fine for your D80. I use Class 6 on my D90 but only for the video, otherwise Class 4 works well on it too. I have to use Class 10 on my D7000 as it outpowers the Class 4 something terrible.

If you shoot in JPG, class 4 is OK for your camera.
Those that shoot in RAW should use a class 6 or 10
because the data file is large..

The higher the class number, the faster the load/download speed of the card. If your camera has a high burst rate (five frames per second or more) and you are in the habit of using this high rate frequently, then stick with a class 8 or 10.
Obviously (or maybe not so obviously), no harm is done by using a faster card than you need; you just waste money buying more than you need. Consider, however, that you shooting habits might change in the future, or you may buy a camera with a faster frame rate, in which case the higher rate might prove to be a good choice after all.

I am considering getting a SanDisk Extreme 16 gb (45 meg) card for my D90. . .However, I'm told that it will NOT read at the high rate because of "older technology". . .

What has been your experience?

My D300 writing a 14 bit uncompressed NEF ( RAW ) file takes less than 1 second.

25 MB files, at 45 MB/s should be about 1/2 second.
Which will be the limiting factor when shooting continuous.

Thanks to all of you. . .The "problem" (issue) has been resolved. . .

Here's to good "shooting". . .And, I am NOT referring to the much misunderstood 2nd Amendment! <smile>
