I've been heading down the road so often and had to pass up hawks sitting near the road because of traffic or couldn't find a place to pull over. Finally, had the shot! Saw this guy in the top of a small pine tree just off the edge of the road in time to pull into the driveway directly across from him. Surprised he sat there as long as he did.
Taken with my 60d and 100-400L on a very overcast day from about 50 feet away.
C&C always welcome. These shots are cropped pretty hard and I used manual focus just to gain a bit of practice with that.

Nice! Looks like there needs to be a Christmas tree in there somewhere. Got that sort of feel to it for me!

In this case the predator was/is probably an insect.

That's a Grey... common host to the Tree Squirrel Bot fly, a SERIOUS pest that in sufficient numbers can actually KILL an otherwise healthy squirrel.

It's pretty common here in the Panhandle of Florida, in fact the most common of all Bot infections around here.

Thanks Cholly, I'm gonna check that site out...gonna send this info to my friend too, he's gonna love it!

I'm hoping he does too...we'll keep an eye out. He hangs around here often, especially with free food. A knowledgeable friend of mine said he's seen wounds like that before with squirrels, they seem to finally heal up fine. Hope this one does, but boy, that's a serious infection or something going on.

Oh! Is that what it was. We don't have much of that in Savannah

Yup, it's snow. We don't tend to get much here in central VA either but when they call for the slightest bit, ya better stay off the roads! Folks see a flake and immediately lose control of their vehicles. Weatherman says it might snow and the groceries stores are packed for, oh, all 6 hours we might be snowed in.

Thanks Ed! I think he must have put his face down into the snow!

I kept seeing this guy showing up at my feeders and noticed what appeared to be an odd wound on it's back. Some of you show these excellent shots of a predator landing on it's prey. Here's the prey that apparently survived the attack and lives on for another day. I'd guess the larger wound is infected, but notice the smaller puncture to the left.
Taken with my Canon 60d and 100-400L with heavy cropping.

Survival of the fit...

Thank you MissStephie! I liked that look too. I wonder what she's thinking...
I think I'm understanding why I see photographers at weddings take a kazillion shots! I threw away a bunch of these two to be able to select the best pose.
And thanks Linda from Maine! I didn't even notice the depth of field, not even sure I was thinking about it although I shot at several f-stops, I think.
Thanks again.
