We can be a cult if we want. (I'll bet Canon users can't say that. I still have my F. We went all over Southeast Asia together, and both came back in one piece. Added and Ftn while in Hong Kong, but sadly it and many lenses were stolen. Replaced with two N90s, which sit in a drawer while I learn my D5000.

When I got my d5000 video was just something that came with the camera. My wife is a singer, and I decided to film her with sound. Using a tripod, a primary lens on manual, and the mic on the camera, I got excellent video and sound. Now I have to figure out how to edit, but I have time. My biggest issue if forgetting that I can shoot video and stills with the same tool.

I find most of the interest on the right 2/3 of the picture, and my eye keeps wandering over to the left, looking for something, and not finding. Otherwise, great picture. I like the way you have included the path leading us to the tree.

My 58mm f1.4 Nikkor has rattled since 1964. Its the best lens I've ever owned.

When I was at Brook's in 1965 we had to use 4x5 view cameras. Graflex was not allowed. I just got rid of my film hangers, I don't know why I kept them. After you have exposed the dark slide more than once, you will get the hang of it. Then there's the surge with improper developing. Your first and most important accessory will be a good vacuum cleaner for the film holders. Do I miss large format? Not as long as I have my Nikons.

When I worked for a newspaper as a graphic artist it was very clear what we could and could not do with photoshop. Now, I can and do do whatever I want with a photo, but I always indicate that it was 'shopped, if it was. Coming from a photojournalist background I am having a great time with the freedom to manipulate photos to MY liking. When I signed up with deviantart, I did so as a photographer and photomanipulator. I am also in awe of the people who can do fantasy stuff because they have the talent and skills that I don't. (Like being able to draw)

I started with photoshop 5.5, and recently got cs5. I had to take a class at our local college when I started, and I've forgotten so much I'm taking the class again for cs5. Either PS is getting easier to use, or I'm getting better. (I suspect the former.)

Even when we shot film, we weren't straight out of the camera. (except for polaroid). We went into the darkroom, or to a custom lab with all sorts of instructions so we got the prints we wanted. Photoshop is no different than the darkroom, and using everything straight out of the camera is like selling the prints you had made at wal-mart. Ansel Adams shot perfect negatives, and spent hours in the darkroom. If you are good enough to shoot digital with no PP, You are remarkable.

DK: I agree, but I would like to comment on the quality of the discussion. I have "lurked" on other boards and never commented because of the rudeness and likelihood of being flamed. That has not happened here, even with a topic with no answer. I applaud this group.

WoW!!! Merlin, thanks for that. I've been going the long way around using layers with more frustration than success. This site is growing on me as I let my prejudices down. Thanks again.

I basically agree with the others, but with film we usually also had a budget, which required discipline. jfk159 summed it up with others liking many more than we do. I used to feel good if one of 24 exposures was satisfactory. That didn't mean my clients weren't satisfied. Digital has released us from the expense, but I still am trying to overcome the discipline.

I've been wrestling with this for some time. The difference between a photo and art; the difference between snapshot and photo, and the difference between what I feel is denigrating--the difference between a photograph and a "capture". To me, capture reduces a photo to a shapshot, ignoring the skill, effort, timing, the point the artist is trying to communicate, and post processing. I gave part of my portfolio to a friend who is also an art instructor with the request to tell me which are works of art, and which ones are nice pictures. I hope we find the answer.
