Hi all, I recently ordered an AF-S VR Zoom 70-300 mm f/4.5-5.6G IF ED lens from Photo Video Plus. When it arrived,
all the tape on the box was fine as was the packing box. However, when I opened the box, the lens box had a razor blade cut
across the top of the box--very noticeable. This concerned me since this was supposed to be a new lens in a pristine box.
I also wondered if, in the future, I wanted to sell this lens, I would have trouble doing so because of the damage to the
box. I expressed this anxiety to Photo Video Plus several times, but they seemed unconcerned and did not offer to replace
the lens and the box. The lens seems to work fine. I also worried if this might be a used lens. I think who ever packed the
lens must have seen this damage. Photo Video Plus states that they don't know where the damage came from or when it
occurred.

Would a cut across the top of a lens box bother you if you were purchasing a new lens?

Thanks,

Christy Kabler

It wouldn't bother me the slightest bit as long as the contents were not cut or damaged. The cut on the top of the box doesn't mean the box was ever opened or that it is a used lens. B&H is a very reputable company and I do most of my buying through them. I have never had any problems at all with any purchases from B&H.

I am. My brother lives in Georgia so I will visit him and the two of us will give it a try. He has shot other eclipses but I haven't yet.

Go to Affinity Photo. They just released their Beta version for Windows and it is free to download. When the full program comes out, you will probably get a discounted price to purchase it. Other than that, look and wait for someone to have a sale on PP software. I don't know of any codes for discounts.

Affinity Photo for Windows isn't in Beta any longer. I bought it back in January of this year when they offered it for a special of $39.99 (a savings of $10.00 off the regular price). They are currently on version 1.5.2.

I’m curious: on which camera did you learn photography, and your first “professional” camera.

I owned a Brownie (Holiday? Bullet?), but in my photojournalism class at The Ohio State University in the late 1960s/early 1970s Paul Peterson introduced us to basic shooting and film processing using a 4x5 Speed Graphic. We then quickly moved to the Nikkormat FTn.

My Air Force public affairs office ("information office" at that time) had a Canon TFb and a couple of lenses. So around 1974 I bought my own FTb ($170), a 50 mm f/1.4 lens ($130) and a Vivitar 70-210 zoom ($204).

My first was a "4x5" Graflex Speed Graphic" press camera my grandfather bought for me when I was 14 and then a little later I bought my first 35 mm camera, an "Argus C3".

I have downloaded Nik, but no matter what I try, am not able to get it to run after it is installed. Did they quit letting you use it after 4/2016? thanks for any help, as I am a Luddite when it comes to computers. I am a struggling beginner photo and PC person, but really love all the info on UHH, Thanks everyone (Using Win 10 PC)

NIK software are plugins for Photoshop, Lightroom, Paint Shop Pro or other similar editors. You can run the NIK Collection as standalone program but to do it you have to drag the picture that you want to work on and drop it onto the actual ".exe" file. For example if I want to work on a picture in Color Efex Pro 4 I would click on the picture and drag it to:

C:/Program Files/Google/Nik Collection/Color Efex Pro 4/Color Efex Pro 4.exe

Then it will open in Color Efex Pro 4 without using it as a plugin. It works for the other programs in the collection too. To use them as standalone it is easier to create shortcuts to each of the ".exe" progarm files and put them into a folder on your desktop for quick access.

I haven't been satisfied with some of the white balance results I get when I have used a grey card (I use Lightroom). My white balancing seems to be better when I eyeball it. Has anyone else had the same experience? Are the results much different between different brands of grey cards?

I have owned many grey cards from different sources and if they are set side by side they do not necessarily match exactly in color. The shade of grey varies some but all that really matters is that the RGB values are all the same making them neutral. Any neutral shade of grey will work perfectly well to set white balance to eliminate color casts.

A good true 18% grey card is also useful to check exposure when shooting since it is what the camera lightmeter is trying to adjust thescene/subject to be.

Currently the only post processing software I have is ViewNX-i and CaptureNX-D that I get with my Nikon camera. I would like to concentrate on landscape photography so I'm asking which post processing package would you recommend?

ON1 Photo RAW 2017.5 or Affinity Photo, either one would be good for you. If you want something very much like Photoshop but without a monthly fee, go with Affinity Photo. If you want something that is more like Lightroom but with added functions, go with ON1 Photo RAW 2017.5.

Problem with Photoshop CS6

Normally after opening Photoshop and going to file then open a window opens with all the photo files in the folder it's working in and the picture icons are all in alphabetical order by name A down to Z or what ever. For some reason now it's scattering the picture icons all around in no logical order and it's really hard to find the file icon I'm looking for. I don't see any way to re-organize the icons. Any suggestions. Other programs seem to be OK.

Thanks in advance,
Huey

If you are running Windows when the file explorer opens for you to select a photo, change the view from thumbnail to "Detail" mode. In that mode you can click on the "Name" header at the top and it will sort the contents of the folder alphabetically for you. by clicking on it you can toggle between ascending or decending order.

Trying to move my photography along from a beginner by taking a couple of classes through the informal class section at the local university (Univ. of Tx. at Austin. Hook'em Longhorns.) Anyway, one class will be about using Photoshop cs-6 or Photoshop CC. Have never used either one before. So, where and what is the best source, price wise, for purchasing the above? Also, need to know if either software program can be put on more than one computer, how many, and if it can be transferred to another computer if bought later. I have noticed on the internet that there can be 30 free trials on downloads; do they automatically cancel at the end of 30 days or automatically renew?
Also, any suggestions about computer capability specs to handle the software and my photos.
I know I have lots of questions, but figure I will be able to good some really good answers on UHH>
Thanks.

Your cheapest route while going through the classes would probably be the $10/month Photoshop CC from Adobe. When the classes are finished you can either continue paying the $10/month to stay with Photoshop CC, or if you decide you don't want to continue paying monthly payments to use it, you can cancel the Photoshop CC and purchase a standalone program where you buy it and it is yours with no monthly fees. Perfectly good alternatives do exist, and work quite well. I generally suggest "Photoshop Elements" along with a $12 program called "Elements+" that adds additional Photoshop capabilities to "Photoshop Elements", or "Affinity Photo (Serif)" and there is also "Corel Paint Shop Pro". Any of the 3 alternatives would probably give you everything you would be likely to need in processing your photos. There are others to that are completely free that are also available. ON1 sells "ON1 Photo RAW" that is another good program but it doesn't have to looks or feel of Photoshop as much as the other 3 i mentioned. They are bery much like Photoshop in there processing.

As for the 30 free trials, they are a good way to go in order to what you like best. At the end of the free trials on most programs, they simply stop working after the 30 days unless you decide to buy or subscribe in the case of Photoshop CC.

Inspired by Jim Bob question I see that there are a number of us who know which camera they would want to keep for life. If so shouldn't we buy the one we want to keep for life from the start instead of buying the lower end now and upgrading later? I heard so many recommendation for newbies to buy the entry level camera and upgrade when they learn more.

When you first start out, I don't think that you realistically have enough experience or knowledge to know exactly what will ultimately to be the one camera that you want to shoot with for life.

Like the title says I have a lot to learn in the digital field.

I would suggest you shoot in "RAW" and if want a JPG immediately shoot in "RAW & JPG" mode. Shooting in JPG only offers nothing over shooting in RAW, other than to save some space on your memory card, if your short on space and din't have another card with you. The only other advantage is the availability of a ready to use pre-processed JPG. The RAW file always gives you much more data to work with and gives you a much better chance to get the shot just the way you want it. The data lost in a JPG is gone and can never be replaced. If you do shoot in RAW only as many do, you can still extract the JPG stored within the RAW filenlater if you want to. I use a free program called "Instant JPEG from RAW" to extract the JPG's if I feel I need them.

I use the software that came with my Canon 5D Mark IV for processing RAW files prior to converting them to JPEGS. It has some limitations and I have been advised that both Lightroom and Photoshop are more powerful tools for processing. At a Big Box store that has a large camera selection they also sell what is called an Adobe Photoshop Lightroom package. The sales staff told me that the two have been combined. An accomplished professional photographer who does my printing for me told me the same thing and demonstrated some of the features on one of my photographs before he printed it, only he has a monthly subscription which automatically provides him with any updates or new versions of the software. I purchased the Adobe Photoshop Lightroom package from Amazon, which came on a disc with an instruction book. Subsequently another professional photographer I know very well told me this is not the same as the version that can be subscribed to on the internet. Can someone please tell me if Photoshop and Lightroom have indeed been merged into one software package, and if not is Photoshop only available through an on-line subscription. Thank you, Ken

Can anyone tell me their experiences of using a full frame lens on a DX body. I'm thinking of trading up to a full frame camera soon and have been offered the gift of a full frame lens which I have been thinking of using on my current 3100 until I purchase the new camera body. Thanks

I have 2 FX lenses at this time that I use on my D3100. They are a Nikon 50 mm and a Sigma 70-300 mm and they work fine except that they only work in manual focus since the D3100 doesn't have a focus motor built into the body. When I use them on my D7100 the auto focus works fine since the D7100 has the focus motor in it. If you don't mind manual focus you should be fine.
