Hi all, I recently ordered an AF-S VR Zoom 70-300 mm f/4.5-5.6G IF ED lens from Photo Video Plus. When it arrived,
all the tape on the box was fine as was the packing box. However, when I opened the box, the lens box had a razor blade cut
across the top of the box--very noticeable. This concerned me since this was supposed to be a new lens in a pristine box.
I also wondered if, in the future, I wanted to sell this lens, I would have trouble doing so because of the damage to the
box. I expressed this anxiety to Photo Video Plus several times, but they seemed unconcerned and did not offer to replace
the lens and the box. The lens seems to work fine. I also worried if this might be a used lens. I think who ever packed the
lens must have seen this damage. Photo Video Plus states that they don't know where the damage came from or when it
occurred.

Would a cut across the top of a lens box bother you if you were purchasing a new lens?

Thanks,

Christy Kabler

Not if the lens is ok. Sure you didn't do that when you opened the box it got shipped in?

So sorry. I made an error in my previous post. The store was B & H Photo--NOT Photo Video Plus.

Thanks.

it was probably cut when the original packing box was cut open and had no effect on the lens. I wouldn't worry about it if the lens is working okay.

If the lens came from BandH, I wouldn't worry about it as long as it functioned correctly. They have very good customer support. Call them and ask about the problem as the other person stated, are you sure you didn't create the cut.

As JQ stated, the cut in the box top probably occurred when a larger shipment of products was opened. If the lens looks new and works as new and came with a warranty card, it probably is new and you are worried about something that many people throw away. No, the cut in the box will not reduce the lenses resale value. Just tape the lid on the inside with a good transparent tape and put the box away...

Trivial matter as long as the lens is ok. The box doesn't take good pictures any way.

If it bothers you, send it back as damaged. Not sure what you expect from an expression of anxiety; there's obviously no way that could have damaged the lens, so I see no reason to expect them to offer a return. But, you either want it or not. And if you don't want it, send it back. You may have to pay return shipping, but since it's damaged you should not have to pay a restocking fee. If the seller balks, take it up with your credit card company.

If it is from B&H, I doubt the lens box was close enough to the top of the box to be damaged accidentally. B&H does a pretty good job of packing in my experience.

You are probably right. But in any case, I wouldn't lose any sleep over it.

It will not affect future resale value in any meaningful way, but if you are really concerned you can buy an empty box on ebay. This is a modern functional lens, not a rare vintage collector's item where original packaging in good condition can make a difference to resale value.

Some people are more willing to buy if you have the original box and paperwork. But those only confirm the provenance as a US model. The condition of the box doesn't matter.

Was the lens listed on B&H as "Open Box"?

Another thought is that a refurb lens may not be shipped with original packaging, but will essentially retain the same resale value as a used item purchased as new. Also, some people will sell unwanted equipment as 'white box' items that are still new with full 'US' warranty but don't have the pretty colored box. The resale value is not likely to be substantially different.

Agreed.
It's rare, but I have received merchandise with "slices" on the box.
(I always cut the tape, never through the shipping box body. Some people zip a box cutter around the perimeter of the box on three sides and lift the top. If they have too much blade out,...)
I throw away my boxes also.
