I am planning on a safari next year. I have a really nice set of lenses, but the longest is a 55-200 mm Nikon DX 55-200. I don't want to have to change lenses at the last moment to switch from a close encounter to a one which may even require more than 200mm. Should I pick up a newer version of my current camera and rent a longer telephoto and then carry 2 cameras? Anyone been on such a safari and encountered the need to change lenses so quickly you missed something?

My current camera Nikon D3400 (I bought it partially in preference to other higher end because I liked its weight and feel in my hand)
My prime lenses: Yongnuo35 mm 1:2 , Nikon AF-S 50 mm 1.8G, Rokinon 8 mm 1:3.5 Fish-Eye CS

My Zooms: Nikon DX 18-55 mm 1:3.5-5.6 G (kit), Nikon DX VR AF-S 55-200 mm 1:4-5.6 GII ED, Nikon DX AF-P Nikkor 70-300 mm 1:4.5-6.3 G (kit)

Sigma is announcing soon their new entry level full frame mirrorless camera body. It will be the lightest and cheapest full frame mirrorless available, which begs to forebode a higher end model to follow. Not many specs or price yet but its coming this winter.
It will accept all L mount lenses for full compatibility with Leica and Panasonic L mount, full frame mirrorless lenses, as well as Sigma own upcoming L mount collection. (Including their new 35mm F1.2 ART L Lens)

BUT, will you mail this camera out to those that want it or will you tell folks they have to come to your store to get it like you told me I would have to if I wanted the Nikon 500mm 5.6?

I’m leaving to Iceland in a couple of days and I am really committed to traveling light. So, I’ve decided to take only the outrageously expensive Sony RX100 iv as my main camera. I hear it’s a great little camera, if i can get thru the detailed menus before I take off. (My iPhone is my backup).

Any recommendations for a good YouTube tutorial or a readable, user friendly guide other than the online Sony manual would be greatly appreciated.

Any hints from experienced users would also be great.

Will I regret leaving my full frame or MFT with a variety of lenses at home and traveling instead with one of the smallest high quality compact bridge cameras instead?

Thanks

I prefer the Sony HX99V with it's 24 to 750 mm Zeiss lens that fits into my belt pouch.

The flexibility to chase subjects that are moving vertically is where I ditch the monopod (BIF etc). Most sports are largely horizontal so the monopod works well....

I mostly photograph birds in flight, I wish they knew the word HORIZONTAL FLIGHT.

BLASPHEMY!

I have used Sony, Canon, and Nikon almost interchangeably. They each have their own advantages.
For me, creativity is more important than the equipment I use.

Helps stabilize the subject in the viewfinder at long focal lengths. Use it extensively in high speed sports. Less about the number of stops you may be able to gain in that situation.

Today's light front elements like that for the Nikon 500 5.6 is a game changer. I no longer need the monopod I had to use for the 500 4. And, because I am hand holding, I am getting shots I was incapable of getting with the 500 4.

Where the f4 aperture comes in handy is for fast/accurate AF in lower light and for throwing the back round out of focus when shooting large animals (at some distance) like moose, bear, elk. Bison ect ......f4 is also more conducive to shooting in the lower light of the higher latitudes.

With today's high speed low noise DSLR's F5.6 is very good and can do the same as the F4. One stop does not make that a big a difference for the seasoned photographer. My 500 5.6 can thrown the back ground out as well as my f4 did. I owned them both so I should know.

No. This lens is obviously made for outdoor use so an extra stop is not nearly as critical as it might be for a lens used indoors.

With today's high ISO camera's, f4 is no longer necessary even for indoors.

Except that the original question was why there were varying light meter readings with the lens cap on.

My D810 has a built in cover for just this purpose. Light infiltration from the eyepiece is less of an issue when your eye is next to it.

His camera comes with a small piece of plastic that he can put on to block the light. Most folks don't even know it's included with the camera.

They did buy lenses from Nikon in the early day before Nikon made their cameras and only made lenses.

AND. Nikon is a scientific company. Canon is NOT. Nikon makes there lenses from scratch. Canon does NOT.
Nikon camera's are only a very small part of the company, the optics part of the business is much larger than the camera division. Canon is NOT set up that way.

D850 is currently discounted. Announcement of D760 and D860 expected in September, or sooner.

Maybe in your store the D850 is discounted. But it seems at B&H still carries it, and it is in stock, not discounted.
