They are protected under overhanging rock. The pigment is made of darker sandstone. It actually soaks into the porous sandstone walls binding to it and becoming one.

Thanks Retired CPO. I should have mentioned it's about a 6 or 7 mile hike with a 700 or 800 foot drop into the canyon. Anyone in average shape should be able to do it and bring lots of water. It gets hot.

Thanks Minitman. Horseshoe Canyon is part of Canyonlands NP. From Hanksville Utah drive north 20 miles on hwy 24. Turn right (east) on a dirt road and go another 30 miles.

The pictographs of the Great Gallery are the most impressive rock art sight I've seen. It is 180 feet long and 12 feet tall. It has multiple 6 foot tall human shaped figures plus many animals also. Recent studies have dated the rock art at 1,000 to 2,000 years ago.

These are a few photos of my hike into Horseshoe canyon. This is a beautiful canyon located 30 miles down a bumpy dirt road off of Utah Hwy 24. Because of it being literally in the middle of no where, it is quiet and peaceful compared to the crowded national parks. On my hike I spotted mule deer and multiple lizards. There are burros down there also but I didn't see them. I'll show pictures of the pictographs (which are the main attraction of this place) in my next post.

Was there in May. There's few actual trails. It's a big bowl of hoodoos that you can wander all over the place in. Highly recommend.
