Okay, I am sure this is a silly question, when I am shooting in TV & AV, it worries me to leave my lens sticking out when I put my camera away, is there a proper way to put it back without switching back to Manual and doing it?

I shoot a Canon T3i. If the lens is in auto-focus mode, I just put the lens cap on and press the shutter release half way to "focus" on the back of the cap. The front element will retract.

Here is a shot of the moon I got last night.

The detail is definitely absent, but were you trying to use a "grainy" filter for a specific effect??

Now, THAT shot is n-i-c-e!!

If you are seeing other than perfect sharp.....you need an eye exam Burton. Your shot is superbly sharp.

You could be right, Rich2236. I could be having a problem with my monitor, also.

Thanks.

Burton, i hope you didnt feel that i was being sarcastic or snotty telling you that you need an eye exam. I do apologize if you thought that. it was only meant to say that the picture was really sharp.

Hey! No offense taken; no sarcasm preceived.

Actually, I DO need an eye exam! Well, laser surgery, anyway. I have had cataract surgery (lens replacement) and now they're telling me that a film has formed on the new lens. I go next Wednesday to have the film removed. That could very well be part of the problem, too.

See! You were right and didn't realize it!

If you knew me, you would know that I don't take offense at ANYTHING. :)

Took it up 300%. Hair on racoons chin was still sharp. Don't think this would be so, if it was over-sharpened. Good capture. Wish I had opportunities like this.

Thanks, Audwulf! I appreciate your time to evaluate the photo.

All I can tell you is:
(1) Reside in the right area.
(2) Live right.
(3) Have plenty of dog food on hand. :)

Thanks again, everyone.

I didn't realize that Canon made cameras and lenses this
good. :>)

Thanks for all of the responses. Maybe I was just expecting too much. These old eyes are almost as old as I am, so that could be a big part of the problem.

Thanks, Erv.

When you click on "download", does it drastically change the appearance? On my monitor, it makes it look like it has been sharpened way too much.

The viewer on my computer is IrfanView and this photo, straight out of the camera, looks like it has been sharpened too much. It actually looks terrible. When I open it in Photoshop, much of the grainyness is gone. Looks much like it does here in this post, before clicking "download".

None of my photos are as sharp as I hoped they would be. I shoot with a Canon T3i and the 18-55 and 75-300 kit lenses. I know these are the cheaper lenses, but I did expect more out of them than what I'm getting.

The photo in my post was shot with the 18-55 from a distance of around 10 feet. Should be very sharp but it isn't.

Macoupin Creek, Macoupin county, Illinois near Atwater. The first picture was taken last March when we had some water around here, went back yesterday and took a few more with some color in them. Looks like this bridge is coming down soon one way or another.

By Tennessee's standards, that's a NEW bridge. 8-)

I didn't read this thread until this morning (9-10-12), so I don't have a shot from the weekend. BUT, I do have one from 01-30-12. I believe that was my last one of the half moon.

Thank you, amazing isn't it, it blows away and by the next morning they will have redone the web. The one in the tree was pretty big.

If they keep being rebuilt in the same locations, I guess you could they are good websites.

Second one is very good. First one's a wall hanger, for sure. It would sell MANY times.
