Physical lifespan is determined primarily by two things..the robustness of the produce and the availability of parts if breakdowns should occur. I do not know what Canon's policy is on repair parts, but for most Japanese manufacturers, it tends to be pretty close to 5 years after the end of production. I have a couple of Nikon D300s that still work fine and fill a need for me. But key repair parts are no longer generally available for them. This includes the rubber grip pieces that must be replaced if the camera must be disassembled. So their lifespan, for all practical purposes, is "until they break."

A secondary factor is the availability of newer models which have features that you NEED and which your current model lacks. That one is a little more complicated.

In the case of portable two-way radios, by the way, life span is determined by battery availability. Motorola built a very successful line of two way radios in the early years of this century. When they decided that the life of the radios was over, they simply stopped making replacement batteries available. Because this is a niche market, those batteries are not available from other manufacturers. So the radios gradually become unusable as their batteries fail.

Thanks for that. I didn't mean physical lifespan, I meant the period of time during which the Mk4 is the premier offering in the 5D range, so that I can take advantage of the inevitable reduced price when it is superseded, as the Mk3 currently is reduced.

You may have been reading too many dime store novels. "An informed assessment" can only come from Canon. Your second error is that the price will increase if the model is discontinued. Prices go down. If you are considering one then get one and try it for yourself. If you are serious then you need information other than popularity contests. Study the 5 series bodies and see what isn't yet available on a 5 series camera. IF Canon has several NEW features they might see fit to introduce a new model. My version of this camera does not lack anything that newer bodies offer so I won't expect a new 5 body for some time to come. Canon just finished introducing an entirely new type body in the mirrorless camera. All this is just 6 months away from an olympiad. Lifespan? My Leicas were built pre-WW II, and they still function properly. Take care if your equipment and it will last. Technology is more of a factor here than is time. For the immediate future? Look for Canon to introduce several new lenses, mostly in the long-glass area. Patents indicate that lighter and longer might be their new slogan. Power Focus might become a standard future on all new lenses. Camera technology seems to be stagnant, but there are fish to fry so lenses will get greater interest. This 5 model has a huge offering in its menus, it might be around for as long a the original 5, or longer. You will not be disappointed in what it brings to you or for how long it will continue to do so.

Nothing to do with any dime store novels. Many huge companies maintain a coterie of well-informed near-employees who are privy to much that is in planning. I spent a winter in Turkey with one such person aligned with Microsoft who was in receipt of software to beta-test.
Don't know where you get "second error" from? The whole point of my question is aimed at trying to establish when Canon is likely to release (say, for examply only) a 5D Mk5 so that I can take advantage of the inevitable price drop on the 5D Mk4.
Also have no idea what you mean about popularity contests? I am not asking IF a 5D Mk4 is a good purchase, I am simply trying to ensure that if I buy one at retail on a Friday I am not stunned by a new release the following Monday when my now-purchased Mk4 could be had for much less.

It is clear that this group has some extremely intelligent photographers in it with vast knowledge and insight.
This question is directed to them.
Who can provide an informed assessment of what the likely currency of the 5D MkIV will be i.e. how long do you think Canon will run with this before issuing a replacement?
Obviously this has implications for the $$$ of a 5D - replacement comes out, current stock goes down, new model may cost the same or more.
I'm seriously considering one and naturally would like to make a wise purchase time-wise.

Thanks to all who helped here. I still do not have an L-Plate
BUT, and this is a b-i-g BUT
I have discovered the existence of a camera club in town. I had never heard of this and the fact that one existed never entered my head.
It has been in existence since 1954, so it's 2 years younger than me.
I asked on their FB page and one of their long-term members showed me her tripod/s. Now planning on attending their next meeting to get involved a bit. (Photography Group of Bunbury)
Also took the opportunity when in Perth to look at a Vanguard 264 pro (I think). Very keen on this item.

What is the BH-02, and what brand L Brackets did you get? If the ball head has a standard ArcaSwiss clamp it would fit any of the standard ArcaSwiss L Brackets from Sunwayfoto, RRS, Kirk, Benro, Sieri, and dozens of others. If it has a propritary clamp, you might have a hard time finding an L Bracket for it from anyone other than the manufacturer of the clamp.

A simple solution if you are really in love with the ball head is to just replace the clamp with an ArcaSwiss clamp. If you are not in love with the ball head, just replace it with a head with an ArcaSwiss clamp. Amazon has 20 pages of clamp options as well as ballhead options.

The brand is Fancier. No particular attachment to the head. If I remove the ball bit, an Arca just fits on?

Is there a place near you where you can take the camera and see if you can find a fit? Why do you have 3 plates? Can't you return them?

I live in the SW of Western Australia. Perth, the capital is 160 miles away, and there appear to be only 2 camera shops. One is serious, the other a cheapie. So, difficult to get info that way.

Still on the subject of Panoramas and bits for them.
I just took delivery of an L-bracket that I ordered and once more it does not fit onto my BH-02. I now have 3 plates that do not fit.

Can someone tell me how I know what to order, given that there do not appear to be any Fancier things about the place? I tried a photo shop (two words :) ) in Melbourne but they said they no longer sell L-brackets. Is there a way of telling what my ballhead will take without me simply blazing away and buying plates until one finally fits?

On a side note, why don't manufacturers make these all fit each ballhead? Would seem logical.
thank you
Terry

No, the message is to restart Elements, not the computer. Still, worth a try.

No subscription for Elements. After version 13 came 14, 15 and then jumped to what's called Elements 2018. And already a 2019 is out

Thank you for that.
For the life of me, I can't figure out why on earth it would keep asking me to update, downloading said update, telling me it has been done then asking me over and over to do it.

I thought that after 13, the only way you could get it was by montly subscription but now that I know this is not the case, I will go buy 2019 or, as another poster suggested, buy the PS thing.
I am very wary of subscription things because often you simply can't turn them off.
Thanks again

Hi. I have Adobe Elements 13, which I think perhaps was the last one you could buy outright.
I keep getting notifications that there is an update available. When I do the update, and get told the update will take effect when I restart the application, I go back in and it asks me again to update.

Over and over and over and over.

I now click "Ask Me Later" but the damn thing still randomly returns.

Any ideas as to how I can get this to go away permanently?

But it tells me the update is successful, then repeatedly asks that I do it again.....and again... etc. It doesn't ask me to buy a newer version (which I think are all monthly subscription now??)

Photography can teach you something new each day. I never realized that ducks were not vegetarians. Took some pictures of Hooded Mergansers, one of my favorites, but did not realize until I got home what they showed. Must have been a good day for fishing.

We have Musk Ducks here in West Oz that are carnivores - will eat ducklings of other ducks and even their own if they are in captivity.

Here is a good article on shooting panorama's from Outdoor Photographer's "Tip of the Week" that I read today.

Saw that! Got it in my inbox early this morning. Apropos, eh? Most of the things they say NOT to do I've already done and found out I shouldn't do them e.g. use a wide angle lens. I was in Dublin in a house that backed onto the Liffey just up from Guinness. Beautiful green lawns, lots of trees, deep river and I used a 10-24 in my ignorance. That put a HUGE bend in the Liffey that is just not there in reality.

There is a lot of good advise here that I can only add a little bit to.First, do visit the panorama section here on UHH and you'll see many panos which you'll find are mostly shot "hand held".
Second, when over lapping my shots I find it incredibly easier to just overlap by 50%. To do that, what ever is in the center of the frame is moved to the edge, rinse and repeat as often as you wish. Doing this also helps your processing program stitch your images without glitches. You will shoot more frames this way but @ no extra cost.
Third, Try not to over think the process and also try to keep it simple. Panos are no more difficult than a single image, just more of them.

OK, I understand now. Thank you. The first two are on the south coast of Western Australia at Point Ann and overlooking the Wellstead Estuary. Most obvious problem is that I left my ND grad. filter on. I've been having lots of these memory lapse episodes recently where I do dumb things that I know are dumb but don't see them at the time.

The third one is in Vinales, Cuba, up in the tobacco fields
