Perhaps check out the Panasonic LUMIX FZ1000 for a nice bridge camera which has a 1” sensor, articulating screen, and bright viewfinder. Does a nice job and has great balance. With a little practice one can take decent one-handed shots.

Many good suggestions. I’ve reduced the size and numbers of equipment items so as to better enjoy travel. For this trip I would take my Lumix FZ1000, 2.8-4, 25-400mm, great EVF bridge camera. Not at all bulky and takes great photos. Safari probably will present some opportunities for pix past the 400 range but this lens should handle 90%+ of your needs and enable you to enjoy more of the event. Enjoy your trip.

Have owned the Sony RX100 MK II, Canon SX720, Lumix ZS60, and Canon G7X MK II. Each have appealing characteristics-IQ, Zoom, Size & Weight, Fast Low Light lens, etc. The G7X MK II is wth me everywhere I go. We travel a lot and have basically left the DSLR behind most trips so as to record our visits and not feel encumbered with equipment. Simply the best photos, great intuitive menus, and quality build, IMHO. All above are great but some trade offs. I prefer the results which require the least post processing and still provides great reflections of what I see. Good luck with your choice. Check out which fits his personal situation and he will be fine.

I now use a Canon G7X Mark II for all our travel. Excellent pocketable (great in photo vest or light cover jacket) size and weight with 1.8-2.8 lens, 20mp and 24x100mm. Have a monopod which doubles as a walking cane, but the lens is excellent in handheld mode. Enjoy the trip and obtain great photos with little effort.

Wonderful shots as always. Also appreciate the information data regarding your photo subjects. Chicago is very rich in history and photo ops. Thanks.

The Canon AE-1 Program has been my favorite film camera of all time. I have shot a lot of B&W and continue to do some today with the same camera bought new in late 1980s for son’s high school photography class. He enjoyed and used it all the time. You can still find some good deals online (not produced anymore) and the “retro camera” look is very nice. Still enjoy shooting B&W today on both film and digital.

Thanks for the links...yes, definitely looking for someone with experience or personal knowledge with both. Comparison reviews often promote subjective analyses due to name brand preferences. As is often the case, either probably “good enough.”

Been comparing Nikon P900 and Panasonic LUMIX FZ300 and have questions for anyone with hands-on experience. Both very impressive. Have been balancing different issues but have a major concern. When viewing DPreview Studio Scene Comparison tool, the images of the P900 appear markedly superior and the FZ300 looks very soft and blurry. However, other samples elsewhere compare the two similarly. I also am concerned that although the P900 has the additional range, The FZ300’s 600mm is sufficient for 85% of my needs and I suspect the quality of the images at 1000+ will degrade somewhat. The FZ300 costs less and is weather sealed. FYI, I am not interested in the P1000 or various models of the much more costly (and what I consider superior) Sony RX10. Appreciate your comments; especially concerning the image quality for the referenced 900 and 300, or similarly priced competitors. Thank you.

Take a look at the Canon G7X MK II. Excellent lens and very compact and durable. Comparable to many higher priced cameras. Great bang-for-the buck. Have had zero issues in the year I have owned one; seldom use my DSLR now.

Don’t give up on the Canon G7X MKII—-great walk around camera with a very nice lens and easy menus and features. Gets you up to speed quickly and makes street photography a lot of fun. Originally concerned with 100 mm reach but have found I don’t miss the extra length a few other compacts provide while the G7XII has better IQ in my opinion. Good luck.

Listen carefully to all commenting. This is not idle, foolish banter. A wedding is a very special event that does not provide do-overs and even professional post processing will NOT correct amateur mistakes; not to mention the areas of composition, dof, etc. Enjoy the wedding as the Father of the Groom and not the photographer....

The Keys are great and the wide angle shots dominate. Very little need for tele over 100. 16-35 would be excellent choice. Enjoy.

The Canon G7X MKII has 1.8-2.8, 24-100mm, 1 inch sensor, is great. It is my go-to everyday camera now. I have tried others with longer zoom, but found them to be too soft and distorted at end of range and I realized I do not use long range as much. If I shoot birds and distant wildlife, I usually know in advance and carry the DSLR just for those opportunities; which are less than normal for me. The G7X is a great travel companion—always there, dependable low light and great resolution. The menus are intuitive and way less complicated which I did not always find in some other p&s cameras. Although I would like a viewfinder, the LCD is good enough in bright light that it is not a handicap for me. The tilt and touch LCD is excellent. Can be found on Amazon with number of accessories for <$600.
