Well, hubby and I *are* having fun...I think. It is absolutely sweltering out.
Note to self: do not go to balloonfests in August.

Anyway, here are a few from yesterday. I was flustered by the number of balloons blocking others, as well as the random nature of how they were lit....I never knew which way to turn with my tripod and remote shutter!

I am working in our RV, hiding from the extreme heat and humidity...hoping to have a second chance at tonight's balloon glow...if I am brave enough to endure the weather again. I'm a northern gal in a southern environment and I can get downright grouchy in this weather. Plus, my joints ache!

OK, I will give that a try and repost in the Photo Gallery section. Is there any way to delete this current thread?

Thanks Chuck, I will look in to this. I almost never post pictures, and one of the times I did I remember having to resize them, as they were all too BIG.

Now, it appears, I have done exactly the opposite, lol. On my end they appear to be roughly 2x3 inches, as I chose small when the option to upload appeared.

I used a Nikon D5 and Nikkor 24-70mm at 38mm for this shot. The other settings were:
f/3.2
Shutter 1/160
ISO 450
+0.3 step

I didn't try shooting a single balloon because there was 600+ balloons at this event in New Mexico. I wanted to get the scale of all the balloons. There were hundreds of people between me and these balloons which is why you don't see the baskets.

Have fun!
Steve

Thank you! I will keep these in mind for tonight. I am about to post some that I took yesterday.

Thanks…this weekend was preceded by a week in upstate NY in full tourist mode.
The heat and humidity here in MD is kinda taking the fun out of it!

Thanks. This is the Chesapeake Balloonfest in MD and there is absolutely nothing of interest in the area as far as backdrop. Just flat boring farmland. Oh yeah…and 90 weather with sopping wet humidity.

Anyone have any good suggestions for settings on a Canon 7D M2 with Canon 10-22mm wide angle?

I have two nights to screw this up.🤣

TIA

Lots of good buys there. Keep in mind that anything after 2015 is not upgradeable, and Apple is moving to a new chip which will make all prior models obsolete in about 5 years.

Warning, a lot of cute ahead!

All taken with Canon R5, RF 100-500mm lens and 1.4x extender. Handheld with a lot of assists from fence posts. Most were focused with the animal recognition, eye focus mode. It worked quite well on Prairie Dogs.

Love prairie dogs. Use to own ten of them!

Wondeful!

When I was there a few years back I was hoping to see a bear. In our 6 week, 10K cross country trip we always seemed to be a day late and a dollar short seeing bears.

So, hubby and I are alone on this little trail and he says...."I see a bear." Of course, I thought he was joking but followed his gaze. There, about 50' away, was a large black bear quietly eating berries.

In my excitement I raised my camera and took the shot, completely forgetting it was in A mode at that time. The flash went off. Suddenly, we had the bear's FULL attention.....

We still laugh about that to this day, and I now shoot almost fully in M mode, lol.

This guy is called a pro by many. He uses a Ricoh GR1 or a GR21 and typically doesn't even compose in the viewfinder. I am pretty sure he uses his camera in full automatic mode. His prints sell for $1000s. In Japan, he is considered a Master of Photography. But you'd have to expand your definition of what constitutes a pro to wrap your head around his art and mastery.

How a picture is recorded and processed is a workflow filled with lots of choices. Image manipulation for artistic effect is one of them. And no, creating a perfect image in a camera without post processing is not the mark of a pro. The final image is. Also a pro can be a commercial product photographer, a portrait artist, event photographer, wildlife and nature, sports, fashion, food, etc etc etc - and each have different standards for their specific piece of the industry. The only ones where the picture goes straight from the camera to print or publication are the documentarians - reportage, forensics, crime scene, etc. But these images are typically boring and not creative in the least. Not something you would see in a gallery or museum.

Wow! I wouldn’t give two cents for any of those crappy photos!
Another “beauty is in the eye of the beholder”, I guess.
