Anyone have any good suggestions for settings on a Canon 7D M2 with Canon 10-22mm wide angle?

I have two nights to screw this up.🤣

TIA

Are you at Midland's River Days? I was there yesterday for the launch at 7:00pm but didn't stay around for the Balloon Glow. I'm not sure how far the viewing area extends but I ended up shooting into the sun. Here is a link to an article I found that may be helpful:

Here's a link to a Flickr album I shot with a Canon SX50 .

You can see some of the challenges I had facing the sun. Just an amateur hobbies. Good luck! I'll follow this thread to se if you post any shots.

I shot them in the 1/30 range IIRC almost wide open as I recall and ISOs were acceptable. If the balloon fills 50@ or so of the frame that should be close enough for the first shot then adjust or add EC as needed.Depending on lens length and IBIS you can go slower than that if needed but I was more concerned with subject movement.

Thanks. This is the Chesapeake Balloonfest in MD and there is absolutely nothing of interest in the area as far as backdrop. Just flat boring farmland. Oh yeah…and 90 weather with sopping wet humidity.

Thanks…this weekend was preceded by a week in upstate NY in full tourist mode.
The heat and humidity here in MD is kinda taking the fun out of it!

I used a Nikon D5 and Nikkor 24-70mm at 38mm for this shot. The other settings were:
f/3.2
Shutter 1/160
ISO 450
+0.3 step

I didn't try shooting a single balloon because there was 600+ balloons at this event in New Mexico. I wanted to get the scale of all the balloons. There were hundreds of people between me and these balloons which is why you don't see the baskets.

Have fun!
Steve

Thank you! I will keep these in mind for tonight. I am about to post some that I took yesterday.

All the Balloon Glows I have been to have been stationary sedentary events with plenty of time to photograph the participants. Unfortunately those in the later years are regimentated so that all the balloons go up en masse and tend to crowd together, and they start at dusk so by the time the balloons are up it dark.
If the main thing you want is full balloons, all you have to do is choose your f-stop, set a modest ISO, convince yourself that you can hold the camera still with stabilization on, and blast away with a few exposure variations. Then pick the shots that have the right things looking sharp.
For years the St Louis Balloon Glows have been held in late Summer and are miserable events to attend.
Good luck somewhere else.

I put photos on UHH. The balloons didn’t go up all at once, but the glow was sporadic…never knew which one was going to light up next.
No more summer events for me though, as the heat and humidity made for a miserable outing.
I’ll drive further north into the mountains.
