Have camera makers lost vision of actually making photos?
It seems that like the nuclear arms race of the cold war, cameras have generally become overkill to the taking of photos.
Yes, some advances are welcome, especially in the realm of AF and fps. But overall does a camera need to be so complex, needing over 1,500 pages of instructions in some cases, to use them?
Or are all the bells and whistles truly needed and used?
Just wondering for a friend.

In my opinion it’s the opposite. Today’s cameras require no reading of the instruction manual. I can set the camera to Automatic and let it do all the thinking or to fully Manual mode and go old school. Changing settings, if desired, is easier than ever using the touch screen. How much did a Nikon F cost back in the day compared to a Z5 when adjusted for inflation? This is the best time for cameras ever!

Exactly. There's no denying the far superior build quality, customization and weatherproofing of the OM-1. One usually gets what they pay for.

KEH has offered $288 quote for my fairly new Canon SL3 camera. Was using with 17-55 lens which was fantastic image wise but not much fun to use and no 24mm field of view. Doesn't seem to be another similar quality alternative. Have Fuji 18-55 on an X-E1 which will never be sold and purchased an RF 100-400 lens but did not keep the R6. Camera seemed to make all the decisions too quickly for me and not sure of FF. May rent an R7 and have rented Sony RX10 but not wowed. Any thoughts on whether to keep the SL3 and look for some good glass for it if that exists or try RF or Olympus system? Had fun with budget Olympus equipment but would look to go with more pro level. Fuji great for people but not as good as Canon for landscapes.

The best thing about Canon is how they make very inexpensive cameras that are barely crippled compared to the high end models. At the time of its introduction the SL3 was such an example. Now we have the R50, R10 and FF R8. I have recently been shooting with the R50 with the RF 100-400 and enjoy photography more than ever. All of those still have shutter and aperture priority, manual mode and exposure compensation. Only a pro really needs more.

Critiquing photographs and giving constructive advice are good and helpful but don't knock the guy's camera. Most photographers know the advantages and limitations of any camera. Someties they just have to work with what they have and work around the pitfalls.

Your sentiments equally apply to those who brag about shooting RAW or using luminescence masking or layers, etc.. It’s not the camera, it’s not the post-processing, it’s the end result that matters. Enjoying photography equipment technology and photography software are separate hobbies on to themselves.

bkwaters you just cant handle the facts and the reality, so sad. Even my young university photo students learn how to discern and achieve excellent image quality. Maybe you need to be in my classes if you cant see, appreciate or achieve the best image quality.

Cheer and best to you.

I usually shoot RAW. But a well exposed, low ISO image is no less sharp as a SOOC jpg than a PP RAW file unless viewed at extreme magnification. If you can't achieve that there's something wrong with your camera settings. I would be happy to help you identify and correct what you are doing wrong. A challenging scene with high dynamic range, a high ISO shot or extreme cropping are exceptions and benefit from post-processing a RAW.

While I have done Adobe Photoshop, it's been a long time. Since I am just getting back into this, I'd prefer to hold off on making a major investment.

I've been playing with some free programs, the last being Pixlr. There's so much on the web that it gets overwhelming, so I thought I'd throw it out to all of you to get your opinions.

Since I have a lot on my plate, I would prefer a solid program but one that doesn't involve a steep learning curve.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

It seems to me there are people who are leaving RAW for Jpeg. I am wondering if anyone has any thoughts about this?

As cameras become smarter shooting in JPG is less disadvantageous. In fully automatic mode the camera will usually select the best profile for the subject. The camera will also composite multiple shots if needed, such as for overly backlit portraits. If not in fully automatic mode you need to remember to select the appropriate picture style. If you don’t do this it’s better to shoot RAW and select the appropriate profile in PP.

Didn't help my nephew was a goalie and area in front of him conjested

When I focused on my grandson playing soccer goalie my Canon R50 maintained focus on him while the other players cut in front and behind. Much “stickier “ focus than cameras used previously.

Capturing Sports?

It's all about the Glass my friend, the camera really isn't nearly as important as Fast Glass especially primes.
Also wise to avoid "Pumpers" since they can (and do) shift the CG and you'll end up fighting your monopod by the end of your third soccer match of the day. IF (Internal Focus) Primes once balanced float effortlessly on your monopod.

Again, it's not so much the camera in shooting commercial sports... It's all about having a razor sharp clearly rendered Player's Face, a (strategically positioned) Ball in the image and above all else a "clean" uncluttered background detracting from the player(s).

Unfortunately you can't purchase "Excellence" in sport photography, it's pretty much not a consumer commodity...
Excellence in this genre results from endless persistence and carefully analyzing the work of outstanding commercial shooters in your market. Kind sir they are actually your competition...

For a pro, yes fast primes. For a dad or grandad, Topaz AI or Sharpen and Photoshop’s Depth Blur neuro filter can almost replicate the fast prime look. But admittedly, none of mine are as good as your example.

I want to capture sports from youth soccer and baseball to professional pickleball pros

Currently, I use an Olympus em1 mark ii, which is like cutting steak with butter knife. Not very good

I have 3 choices. I can upgrade to Olympus om1, but the Olympus zooms opposite of the Nikon and Sony. For that reason? I won’t consider Canon.

I can go with Sony, but have no glass at all. I would prob get used Sony a7iii

I can go Nikon with Z6ii. I have Nikon glass, albeit F mount.

Ideally, these kids sports need iso 1600. To stop pro action, prefer iso 3200 or 6400 in low light to stop action

I recently captured professional pickleball at iso 640 which was too slow. The ball looks very blurry as the twilight hour approached

So, my dream camera is one with good image quality at iso6400, near instantaneous auto focus, zooming same direction as Nikon, with a zoom out to 200mm at full length (full frame equivalent of 200 is 100mm for Olympus)

I have read extensively about z6ii versus Sony a7iii

Anyone have experience with these systems shooting action?

I have been experimenting with kids soccer and BIF photography with different cameras. The a7R5 is excellent. The a7R4 is not as good. I never used the a74. I tried the very inexpensive Canon R50 - it acquires focus and tracks the right kid as well as the a7R5. I just finished experimenting with the Nikon Z5 - not good. I have not tried the Z8 or Z9. I don’t think you will be satisfied with the a73.
