It seems to me there are people who are leaving RAW for Jpeg. I am wondering if anyone has any thoughts about this?

Out of curiosity where did you collect your data and how much of it to determine this assumption?

This is NOT an assumption. I am on various photo forums and I noticed this within the past months. I have even read it here. I am under the impression that you missed it (them) :)

JPEGs have improved over the years (depending on the camera) and are satisfactory for many people's requirements -- more so than in the past. You're call as to whether your camera creates JPEGs that you're happy with.

I agree. That said can JPEGs be used in Lightroom or Photoshop like RAW images can. I heard no.

Their choice...

I like RAW. My choice.

Yes. They can be edited in any editor but with reduced latitude.

The key is how close to the desired image your jpg can be produced by your camera. If extreme editing is required, raw is better. However as camera jpgs get better that situation will occur less frequently.

I shoot raw because it's insurance against those infrequent occurrences. And since Lightroom is my organizing system, everything goes into it, so it doesn't matter whether it's raw or jpg. I choose raw for the above reason. It doesn't cost me anything.

Shooting in JPEG is nothing to be ashamed of, but do it in private and wash your hands afterwards.

My wife is in healthcare and is a germaphobe so she demands I wash my hands even when I shoot raw.

JPEGs can be edited in LR and PS or another editor. However not like raw images can. There's a lot less that's possible trying to edit a JPEG as compared with editing raw data. AND, if the camera has already screwed up the JPEG you may be unable to mitigate the damage done.

I'm also on various forums and have noticed no indication that people are moving from RAW to jpeg.

Whilst the pros and cons of each format are widely discussed all I have read regarding use are those that say 'I always shoot jpeg', 'I always shoot RAW', 'I will shoot either depending on circumstance' or 'I am starting to use RAW'.

In the posts/discussions that you've read what reasons were given for moving from RAW to jpeg?

If it seems to you then it seems to you, but hey, any excuse for a trolling thread. Twenty pages of drivel pays the bills.

JPEGs can only be partially tweaked in Photoshop or Lightroom. They can be sorted, cataloged and displayed just fine in Lightroom. They also can be adjusted somewhat in both, but how much is more limited and the results often are not as good as they could be working from a RAW file.
