I will be spending a few days in the Red woods and at Crater Lake. Would appreciate any advice on scenic hot spots, time and location. Any place I should check out near these two? I am also allowing a couple days for visiting wineries. :)

Thanks and happy shooting, Tom

I have rented several times from: thelensdepot.com Never had any issues and they too have a "rewards" program.

I shoot manual for all BIF. A lot depends on the birds themselves and distance. Ducks have a faster wing-beat than raptors and so on. Do you want to freeze the shot or give a bit of blur to the wingtips to simulate motion? Lots of work. To be effective one needs to know the camera and the birds.

I have been a casual photographer for many years. I understand the exposure triangle and composition parameters, but there is so much I don't know.

I have traded upwards over the years from various Canons and now find myself owning a full-frame Sony a7ii, and a few lenses, including the 35 mm 2.8, the 70-200 f4 G lens and the 28-70 kit lens.

In my discouraged state of mind, I'm considering downgrading back to Canon, probably an 80D, or maybe venturing into smaller format Nikons.

Is this crazy? Should I just continue to struggle with the excellent equipment I currently use?

I believe you are the one to best answer your question. If you are not enjoying shooting, or finding it a burden instead of fun then why do it? Whatever gets you out shooting and feeling good about yourself is what you should be doing. Enjoy what you do!

Just purchased the 12-28 F4. Was on sale from B & H. Have spent the past few days shooting with it and reviewing the images each evening. I am very pleased with the images from edge to edge. Looking forward to printing a few as will be heading to Crater Lake in a month.

I do enjoy my images after the shot. Some hang on the walls and a lot grand kid photos go to their parents. Sometimes, usually when loading a new batch, something will remind me of previous shots and I will review them. Occasionally I am surprised by how good they look but often I see how I could have improved the shot or tweaked it in pp. It is fun to review and a learning process.

I liked shooting from Chisos Basin, in the mountains. There is a key hole and timing it right can get you a nice shot.el capitan as the sun comes across it is very nice. . Also, several shots from the south rim into Mexico.

7D mark ll for BIF I try to keep my ISO between 200-800. Aperture at 5.6 T is 1000-1600. Have very little issue with noise.

Agree with all on the 100-400 and 1.4 extender. If taking two lenses canon has a 24-105 f4 that may cover the low end, it is an L series also.

I wasn't comfortable shooting in manual for some time. Finally stepped back and shot T priority for a couple of weeks, next a couple weeks of aperture priority, a couple more with bracketing shots and setting iso. Was able to figure out what worked best for capturing wildlife, birds mostly.

Bought the Canon G 7X mark ll last month as didn't want to haul my DSLR and a couple lenses up and down the trails in Rocky mountain national park. Was very pleased with the image quality of the 1" sensor. Concern was over the fact it didn't have a view finder but the touch screen was so easy to use it didn't really bother me. Shot raw, full manual.
