How do you enjoy your pictures?

If you are a photographer presumably you enjoy going out with your camera and taking pictures. Maybe you enjoy processing them and presenting them to a client or showing them to friends or entering them in a competition. You may even enjoy posting your best shots here on UHH or on one of the web sharing sites and basking in the compliments from fellow photographers or friends. If you are a professional you almost certainly enjoy collecting your check and depositing it in the bank.

Is that it?

Do you ever go back and look at your creations just for the pleasure of seeing them? Do you have a batch of favorites that you 'visit' because you are proud of them and they make you feel good or just to re-live old memories? How do you display them - framed on the wall? slide show on your computer? album or photo book? Facebook?

I put my favorites in an electronic picture-frame (calendar) and keep them rolling along ... every couple of weeks I delete some and add some new ones ...

I'm the only one who sees most of my pictures, and that's fine with me. Compliments don't mean much because friends and relatives are always going to say something looks nice. Yes, I do go back and look at previous shots - re-energizes the memory.

I share my photos on DVDs with the people I take photos of. Primarily by making movies or slide shows accompanied with the actual photos in a separate folder. When I do this I charge about $10 per DVD. In some cases they are given free when it is for church or our family.

Every so often, I go back to the accumulated images and cull out the ones that no longer satisfy me - evidence to myself that I am learning and getting a little better every time I get the camera out. Sometimes, I post them on this forum or on Facebook, other times I just show them to my friends when we get together. I enjoy the community and the social interaction with like-minded folks. Recently, I emailed a copy of one casual portrait to the subject as an unsolicited gift and printed another casual portrait for a friend and emailed a copy to his daughter.

What I enjoy most is taking them.

How do I enjoy my pictures? Usually with a cool refreshing beverage.
My favorite ones I print. Size depends on subject and how much I like the photo.
I rarely post online and don't give a rat's tail about sites like Facebook.
If I feel a photo is interesting, at least to me, I may post it here.
I'm amazed at many of the photos that get posted here. Many of them are excellent photographs that the photographer should be proud of. Many are the same old snapshots of the same old subjects regurgitated over and over again and many are just plain bad photos.
I don't know, maybe some of the posters suffer from deteriorating vision. To each their own.

I enjoy getting out and taking photos the most as well as working with editing to get the photo as close to what I saw and felt while taking the shots. I use a digital frame for smaller versions and print my own to hang on my walls if I think they are good enough to show. It is the whole experience that I like even the part that is getting on this forum and viewing others works, and sharing ideas.

I make my own prints on a Canon PIXMA Pro 9000 Mark II, some I sell, some I give as gifts and some I frame: most end up on the walls of our house, some I give as gifts and some I sell, and so it goes. The prints that I frame and hang on the wall, I get to enjoy each and every day. I tell people that get married, instead of spending alot af money on a photo book that you have to open to enjoy, pick about six to eight photos have them custom printed and hang them where you get to enjoy them each day, get an table top book printed that you can take with you when you leave your house.

I go back and look at them on occasion, usually when the "Honey Do" list gets short or when I just have nothing better to do on a lousy weather day. When a photo is good enough to share, I usually send it to the "sharee"--most often my brother who also does photography-- shortly after I have processed it/them; seldom later unless someone specifically asks for one. I keep the best framed on the wall in our 2nd floor loft (my computer and modeling place) or in a second guest room on the first floor. In either place, the guests have little choice to look at them

I do enter shots in our monthly club contests when the theme interests me and do a few local shows a year, not so much to sell, but just to participate; if any sell, good, someone else had good taste; if they don't, oh well!

I generally don't post online, although I'm about to put some of my work on a couple of pay sites where folks can order products.

Most of my work is for proprietary usage, so can't be posted on the Internet. It's on various corporate Intranets and servers, DVDs, and other storage systems.

I print a few things now and then, mainly to give to friends and family. I have a LOT of prints in boxes and albums.

The worst part about prints, negative film, and slides is that they are physical items. They have to be scanned or copied to be shared on social media, or emailed, or shown on the big screen in the living room.

The second worst thing about color negative film, chromogenic black-and-white film, and (Ektachrome) slides is that they fade. Kodachrome lasts for decades, but a slide is still a physical or atomic image, that has to be scanned or copied to be shared.

I have a tendency to scan through my old photos from time to time, and enjoy them. But I haven't turned on my top of the line Ektagraphic III AT slide projector in over 20 years!

So, I'm about to spend some time copying my black-and-white negatives from my youth, along with my slides (mostly Kodachrome) from the '70s and '80s, to raw digital files. The raw files let me use all the power of Lightroom and Photoshop to turn my best images into better media than the best prints I ever made in a darkroom.

I built a home-brew copier that uses a Lumix GH4 camera with 30mm macro lens, a horizontal sliding rail to enlarge and reduce image size, a negative carrier from my old enlarger, and a slide holder I fashioned from shirt cardboard and popsicle sticks! The negative carrier and slide holder attach to the system with magnets, so I can swap them out quickly and adjust alignment easily. The rails they attach to are the slot covers left over from putting SCSI and USB cards into old Macs...

The backlight is a 5500K photo grade fluorescent lamp, diffused by three sheets of translucent art paper. I made the light fixture out of a 100' 35mm film can left over from the 1970s, and a ceramic sign socket. The frame is made of particle board left over from a ping-pong table shipping carton.

The only thing I bought was $5.38 worth of translucent art paper. I had all the other stuff just sitting around in my shed or garage.

Here's a sample of what it can do. This is from a 35mm HP5+ negative made in May, 1986. Exposed in raw, inverted and processed in ACR and other Photoshop tools.

I take mine primarily for me and my wife, but I usually post a new banner image each week on my FB page. I hang a few in the home, and have donated some (matted) to the raffles for my high school reunions when we have them. (That reminds me, I REALLY need to add some more to my on-line gallery.) I'll be retiring soon, and looking forward to shooting a lot more!
