That's part of what I love about photography is you use both sides of your brain. It certainly helps to make your vision come about if you understand what your tool can and can't do. Do you need to know how the meter actually works - no. But you do need to know what light it is measuring and what the camera translates it to such as getting snow to be white or doing silhouettes. Just IMHO.

I use NIK as a plug in in Photoshop CC and worked fine up until about 2 weeks ago, but now when I used it and click ok in NIK PS closes down and when I re-open the photo in PS none of the NIK layers are there. I have uninstalled and re-installed several times over several days. I am on a MacBook Pro running High Sierra. I did notice in my Applications I have both PS 2017 and PS 2018, could that be the problem?

Love NIK as a plug in.

Every now and then we are in the right place at the right time. Well done, Skornfeld. Hope you have something extra nice picked out for your wonderful wife for Christmas??

I only wish I had a camera store closer than 2 1/2 hrs away. I really miss the local camera stores of my youth.

It's nice having them 20 minutes away and wife has already made some suggestions. As to a previous post I have asked them questions about something but been upfront about buying refurb or used but I also spend money there also.

Camera Bar in Hartford CT is my local store where I'd bought my nikon7200 a year and half ago along with a lense and backpack. Also bought my wife's 7500 there about 6 months ago. Was in to buy a gift certificate and asked if I could hold an 810 and told them I'd decided to a refurbished one which I knew they didn't carry. The owner said he just happened to get back one from nikon yesterday that a customer had brought in for an exchange. He said he'd seen them online for $2179 but since I was a good customer he'd sell it to me for $1700! After confirming with my wife I could get back in the house if I bought it the deal was done! Took a pic outside last night without flash at Iso 8000 just for kicks and looked amazing on the lcd screen but haven't downloaded it yet.

Don't forget the D800 used. Some can be found that are still like new for substantially less than a new D850. Look used cameras over carefully. There are gems, but some were used as work horses.
I use the D800 as my primary camera, but I find an old D300 works just fine indoors with available light. If you make prints no larger than 8 X 10 you should be able to do "some" cropping.
As has already been said, if your 7200 has a problem with available light, just up the ASA/ISO to what ever proves to work. Unlike faster films, I've never noticed a degradation when going faster with digital, although I've not gone to extremes.

Having said that, the full frame sensors will let you do a lot of cropping, but those cameras are noticeably heavier than those with DX sensors. When on the road, or storm chasing I use the DX format only because it weighs less.
For me, weight is a problem as I've been relegated to one hand shooting and the D800 gets heavier quickly.

Thank you for the input - I don't feel the weight will be an issue at this point and hopefully by that time nikon will have come out with a good FF mirrorless that can use these lenses.

I think you would be very happy with the D810. But if you already have a 24-70 why would you need to buy a new 50? Isn't 50 represented with the 24-70? Or are you just wanting a 50mm for a prime lens?

Dennis

I like having the prime 50 even though the zoom covers it. The 1.8 comes in handy for birthday cakes and Xmas trees etc

There might be some terrific Black Friday sales, and often the closer it gets to Christmas, deals start showing up. You might not need to wait as long as you think to pick up a D810.

YEA!!!

One of the advantages of a full frame format camera is that it tends to perform better in low light situations. Given equal size sensors, as with the D7200 and D750, at 24mp, the D750 will perform better in low light because the pixels are larger due to the larger physical size of the sensor. As a result, they gather more light in a given situation. As for which camera has better dynamic range, generally a full frame camera will have deeper dynamic range, but, as the DXO chart shows, that’s not necessarily so universally. My grandson started out with a Nikon D90, and took some amazing photos, but the difference in image quality was stunning when he moved to a D810. Obviously his lenses, such as the Nikon 24-70 f/2.8 and 70-200 VRii contributed to that, but I think you would do well, for what you want to do, with a D810.

thanks - I already own the 24-70 2.8 VR ED and 70-200 2.8 vrii - I'd only need to replace the 50 1.8 DX

Just waiting for the holiday season to pass and then decide between a highly rated used or refurbished - which will depend on what's available and price difference.

After Christmas New Nikon sales should drive the price of the used 810's down.

That is my thought process. Already ordered Darrell Youngs book Mastering the D810. Got his book for the 7200 and thought it was excellent. This way I'll have a head start. Yes I made up my mind.
