How does one show picture of a raw image?

Interesting question. One develops a raw file and then "sets" the RAW file into whichever medium one prefers to "show" the development in, such as: jpg, tif, gif, bmp, pdf, PSD, etc, using whichever viewer one wants on whichever medium one wishes others to view. One might do it one way or one might do it another. It is one's choice.

How right you are. Generalizations about photography and photographers without specifying the type of photography seriously impede communication on this forum.

All of the responses have been great...probably the most congenial post I've read in a long time. Thanks, all! Funny, pithy, and enjoyable.

I read the article and still think there is way too much text and explanation for the newbie to digest... There is no better experience than to learn by doing and a newbie should just understand that a RAW file is just data and when you process then YOU are making the decisions that determine how your pic will look. Specific camera default JPEGs should be pointed out which can be used as starting points or just have the newbie use the 7 or 8 basic sliders explained in ACR for instance and then he/she can see the IMMEDIATE effects before converting to JPEG etc... Let the newbie LEARN by doing... NOT with confusing facts... The basics can be learned in 15 min. by doing and a lifetime to perfect.

Trolls need love and caring friends too.
Put a decorative bridge in your yard (you can put a little pool there for it to go over) and provide a home for a troll. You can even put your big screen TV and the sound system by a picture window that looks over the bridge so your troll can watch TV with you or listen to music. You may gain a friend and will have a built in guard on your property. What burglar with a double digit IQ wants to try to break into a house guarded by a troll?

Billygoat Gruff will have someone to work on, then. LOL.

I'll address the, "Who cares what an unprocessed RAW file looks like???" portion of your post. The RAW data converted, without adjustments, to an image can be used for instructional purposes.

The portion of your post regarding "when one becomes a RAW photographer" is spot on.

Great comment...I never thought of it like that... I guess I am a RAW photographer! Nothin' wrong with that. Thanks!!

Robert, thank you very much. This was taken after a year of experimentation with applying The Zone System to digital photography, along with a few other camera-setting experiments.

Additionally, I was fortunate that summer to be provided with ample weather patterns to take advantage of the new techniques.

It has been so long since I have even attempted the zoning system. I think I'll make that a project in the next few weekends. Can you send me a few photos of your work over private chat. I don't want to take away from the RAW/JPG discussion...LOL!

No angry tone here. UHH is good entertainment.

You presenting this material as NOT an invitation to you-know-what is really hilarious, and I thank you for that, and for the next dozen pages of demented "discussion" yet to come.

Bwahahahaha!

You've been on this site since 2015. How many times have you seen the RAW vs JPG topic produce endless pages of the same tripe?
--Bob

True. I wonder if we could keep the tripe to a minimum for once. And keep it civil. I hope so b/c flipping through endless pages of tripe to get to the creative process does get tiresome.

I have gone through several conversations and taken out good, critical, technical, and creative suggestions from the forums and placed then in a file I can refer to without the venom from a few Hoggers. I hope UHH could do the same and place them in a "Best Practices" section of the UHH Forum for reference.

I want to be clear about one thing: If you shoot jpg most/all of the time, GREAT! Remember, YOU ARE THE PHOTOGRAPHER. I know a professional photographer who has never shot RAW. His photos are fantastic! He works hard to get it correct in camera and uses minimal adjustment in developing software to perfect his vision. HE SHOOTS JPG. There, I said it, Jerod! Lol.

Not definitive, to be sure. Would you mind delving into one area in the article that isn't so cut and dry? Just as a matter of correction. :0)

I agree with JD, here we go again.

Please, keep in mind this article was written 2 years ago. Secondly, these authors are paid to write. Quantity is probably more important than quality, even if their offerings are somewhat factual.

Thank you, Bob. Things to keep in mind for the beginner and just about everyone, too. Much appreciated.
