I read a great article this morning about RAW and JPG I thought was great for everyone with a question or two about what the differences are. This is, by no means, a definitive peer into the science, though...but it has pictures! LOL.

Lol! The link is really intended for beginners and to be informative for everyone...and it has pictures! Not that beginners need pictures, though. I, however, love 'em... :O)

I agree with JD, here we go again.

Please, keep in mind this article was written 2 years ago. Secondly, these authors are paid to write. Quantity is probably more important than quality, even if their offerings are somewhat factual.

Very very very old article with lots of bad misinformation, but it does have pictures.

Thank you, Bob. Things to keep in mind for the beginner and just about everyone, too. Much appreciated.

You've been on this site since 2015. How many times have you seen the RAW vs JPG topic produce endless pages of the same tripe?

Not definitive, to be sure. Would you mind delving into one area in the article that isn't so cut and dry? Just as a matter of correction. :0)

I want to be clear about one thing: If you shoot jpg most/all of the time, GREAT! Remember, YOU ARE THE PHOTOGRAPHER. I know a professional photographer who has never shot RAW. His photos are fantastic! He works hard to get it correct in camera and uses minimal adjustment in developing software to perfect his vision. HE SHOOTS JPG. There, I said it, Jerod! Lol.

That first raw vs jpeg portrait is with the raw unprocessed. And it doesn't say that in the beginning of the article.

I shoot raw unless trying one of the in camera settings that only works with jpeg.

My first digital camera in the mid 90's put out TIFF, my second and third (Sigma SD10 & SD14 dslr's) were raw only so I got used to it and the processing. My 4th dslr (Canon 6D) and all since including my Fuji bridge camera do raw/jpeg/raw+jpeg. It is getting old now and I let our special needs son use it and give him lessons when he asks. I set a new camera on raw the first time I use it. When the R7 I preordered arrives I will set it to raw. The tentative ship date from the Canon Store is June 23rd but I will not hold my breath if doesn't arrive that day.

I am used to the processing so it doesn't bother me and I have more leeway in processing since jpeg has a restricted amount of data compared to raw. If you want to shoot jpeg and are satisfied with the results, go for it.

One last comment. At any time I want or need a jpeg I can produce one from raw. If for some reason you need a raw and shot only jpeg, well you can't do it. I have seen things about apps that claim to do it, but it isn't really fully raw, just a "sorta" imitation.

I guess I'll trot these out again. Photographed using RAW, ETTR/EBTR, and UniWB.

No, this would not have worked shooting JPG.

Be sure the article has NO misinformation as that is NOT good for beginners.
That's how erroneous crap keeps getting propagated.

Beginners shouldn't be introduced to things via erroneous info.

(MOST of it being correct just doesn't cut it.)
