This was discussed recently; I thought I had saved the thread but I have searched and not been able to find it.

I seem to recall a discussion where several UHH members were able to bring non-functioning external hard drives back to life, many using the same method.

I'm not sure if I need miracle or not. I have a (very old) LaCie 200mb external hard drive, once attached to an i-mac, now functioning as a paper weight. If possible I'd like to retrieve its content. Thank you.

If you can hear the drive spinning, try SpinRite by Gibson Research (grc.com). Will need a Windows machine to run the program on. Money back no question guarantee ($80). Follow instructions which include burning a boot CD. Attach LaCie external, boot Windows machine with SpinRite CD, select drive, use option 2.
Most drives it will process in less than a day; I have had it run for a month. I am currently running it on a 320GB drive. It has run 158 hrs and completely recovered all the data on 6 bad sectors; 53% finished.
Great product that I have used 10 years.

While watching my bird feeder this guy landed about 8 feet away. Shot with new Sony A6000 and old Sigma AF 500mm f4 through a glass window.

Having scanned 35mm film and slides in the past (too much work), I recently sent a group of 50 year old slides that my Dad had taken to DigMyPics.com. Since they have 3 different prices per slide, I called to determine the price I needed. Was immediately able to talk to a knowledgable person (what a plus these days). I chose this site for equipment quality, ability to see the raw scan on their website as soon as it is scanned, and once they are enhanced, cropped or rotated, I can delete the ones I do not wish to pay for. My batch is still at the initial viewing stage, I have not received the finished proof sheets and DVD's.
When I get these back I have a box of old 8mm film rolls to send if I am pleased with the slide results.

SSD will probably extend the life of your Mac 2 years if you can live with the 8 GB of memory. Good SSD's can be purchased for less than 50 cent a TB. The problem with most of Apple's current machines is they are not upgradable so you will need to buy all the memory and storage you will need at initial purchase.

SpinRite operates at a more basic level than your operating system and often will "see" a drive that will not mount in Windows or Mac OSX.

If you have data on the Seagate drive you need I would do this:
Purchase a copy of Gibson Research's SpinRite $89(gmc.com). Money back no question quarantee. Follow instructions, download, burn to CD, boot your Win 8 machine. SpinRite should be able to see your Seagate drive. Run with option 2.
I have used SpinRite for over 10 years on all my drives at least once a year for normal maintence. I use it on all new drives. I have recovered many drives for friends.
Note that all drives will fail the question is when.
Also I have not purchased a Seagate drive in 3 years because of the high error count of ECC errors. Seagate is letting the drive software correct errors rather than producing error free drives. I only use Western Digital or Samsung.
Hope this helps.
