Curiously enough, the mosquitoes are only around fresh water wet areas. Which are not as common as most people think of in Alaska. But where they are... Watch out, they may "drink you dry"! But NONE in winter!
Worst places we experienced were: Earthquake Park, in Anchorage comes to my mind; and the road from Cantwell, to Paxson (Denali Highway); and Kantishna (in Denali). The Haul Road to the North Slope (Prudhoe Bay bay)!
But then and again, it may have been the time of year we went, late spring (late May thru late June), and mid-January to early February!
Curiously enough, the mosquitoes are only around f... (show quote)

With permafrost only a foot deep from the Brooks Range to the coast, in spring, it's all fresh water. One of my fondest memories of Fairbanks is chipping ice from my driveway and slapping mosquitos at the same time- every year.

Beauuutiful scene! Love the setting, and colors!
When we were in that area, almost everything was white!

I'll bet that today, everything there is still white DougS! But, as you know, the next 60 days or so will witness many changes... and I'd love to be there and see it again.... don't need the mosquitoes though...

pls post more!

You're in luck dreff; I found a cache of old files I'd done nothing with- in 26 years- and am in the mood to shove 'em through Lightroom with a dash of Photoshop just to see what happens. Now, to find the time for doing it...

Thanks!! What a great shot! The only ones that we saw were at a Musk Ox "farm" north of Anchorage.

Don't think I ever made it to there Chief, but University's research center in Fairbanks is a cool place and, once upon a time, musk ox would rub against the fence- the same one you're standing at!

This one of those fabulous photos that show how important lighting is to the beauty of the picture.

An incredible picture that you captured at the right place and at the right time.

You're right, JimBo42, light is everything in photography and, if we're lucky, we get to see and record some pretty cool sights- THANKS!!
What a classic picture. I think your Musk Ox outdoes my buffalo. It needs a good brushing though [8^)
Funny thing about musk ox, Barre, they're not near as friendly as they look! Sure, after a few drinks they might let you brush 'em but it's risky business! Probably best to let musk ox and buffalo both tend to their own personals! Although, a couple of pounds of musk ox hair/fur/follicles is a pricey item and much sought after by weavers, spinners and old hippies! Thanks for looking, Barre!

Probably don't want to be there today, David... but it'll be beautiful in another couple of months... bring your bug spray... Thanks for looking and commenting, too!!
