I was there in the U P, in '75 and '76.... Beautiful country. Michigan is lovely...... I am a water girl. So have lived on the ocean since. From the beaches of the Florida Keys to Maine. But I will always have a special place in my heart for Michigan... Hugs to all your pups!

Something about this place kind of grows on you. I'll be going out to take care of the dogs shortly, and will give them all a scratch for you.

How long have you been in Marquette? Now I get the 27 dogs! I used to fly to Marquette back in the day when I worked for the Alibi....... Many, many moons ago. I grew up in Michigan and graduated from MSU.... Go Green.... Love the UP. Beautiful...

I've been here since 1977, except for 5 years I spent in Detroit getting some engineering experience. It has been a while since I heard the Alibi mentioned, although I never went there. I've spent most of my life in Michigan though not in the same place. My father was a minister and served a number of churches throughout Michigan, each time moving further North and ending up in Ishpeming. I graduated from MTU, so having Huskies comes natural in a way. And I can't imagine living anywhere else. We have 40 acres off in the woods South of Marquette, and love the seclusion.

Totally get it! But you have 27 Huskies??? That is beyond cool! Heck, I have two big old Briards and I barely have room to sleep or sit on my couch! I am so jealous! And your photo is beautiful!

I train them as sled dogs and participate in several sled dog races in the U.P. and Wisconsin. They are beautiful, affectionate dogs, one big happy family, actually, but aren't very competitive. The dog in my avatar is 4 years old and one of my favorites. Most of them sleep outside in kennels, and most of them are also getting old.

I just told Earl and Louise, (my two Briards) that your dogs sleep outside and both just looked at me like I was crazy... Then Louise went over to the "treat" drawer..... Excuse me while I go get them a treat. I am such a sucker for fur children.... :-) I think my human child would agree as well!

Love these pictures. Lived for 12 yrs in the UP (Marquette). Miss this time of year a lot. Not the winters though. (maybe for the scenery but not the cold.

Thank you. Marquette is a beautiful area. I have sled dogs, so being outside in the winter is a given, and I've gotten used to it, but I know it isn't for everybody (of which I am very thankful).

Inspired by the thread "show off your squirrel pictures. I decided to started a new topic with turtles.

The drought in Houston has dried up the little creek behind our yard. We have buckets of water that are low to the grass and found these guys hanging out in our yard.

1 and 4 are fabulous!

Well, by your profile photo, you may be the first winner already! But anyone who can't handle the heat of not winning and just enjoying the challange, should NOT enter! This is supposed to be fun!!! No one needs anymore pressure in their lives... At least I don't!

Thank you for the compliment; that is one of my 27 Siberian Huskies. I wholeheartedly agree with you about doing it for the challenge, but I've seen people get upset about the silliest things, and I would hate for something that started out for fun to be tarnished by pettiness. Like I said in my post, I was just sharing my thoughts on the matter.

Another area I am exploring is taking a photograph and making it a digital painting. It's more than just apply effects and filters, and some times I am actually drawing on the photo. I think my first couple of attempts have been pretty good. I had them printed on canvas to add even more texture and effect. They're at Sunshine Resort, near Parker Dam on the river, CA side. What you you think?

Anyone else trying this?

You might try to sell your work through a local framing store. Some of them sell works by local artists. This way you don't have to interact with the people who are looking. Just collect the money when they are sold.

Good idea, thanks so much for the suggestion....... Not sure what I will do when I fill my friends an family homes up with my stuff!
:-) They will thank you as well!

I think that is a great idea. I think that it would be a good way to get our creative juices going, as long as everyone understands that there is bound to be some subjectivity involved and not to take the results personally. If you had some guidelines to follow, it would be less likely to play a major part, and would be easier for participants to understand what the selection is based on, unless you want the "winning" image to be chosen simply because the judge liked it better than the others, and that could be in the guidelines as well. Just my thoughts on the matter.

I suggest trying it bi-monthly, and then asking the participants whether that is long enough, or whether it should be once a month.

Cindy, in photography, there is never a dumb question... Only interested people..... So don't apologize! Seriously, we are all here for one reason. So no worries........... Heck, I am the girl who is too insecure to even try to sell my work!

Excellent advise from snowbear.

I give this advise often these days.
Go to the library and study the oldest books you can find first. Disregard the chapters having to do with the chemistry of film development etc. Study composition, focus, depth of field, lens types and how to judge exposure etc.

These principle have not changed since they were written down and the older illustrated books tend to have great examples presented in a classic way.

Great advice...... I used to spend days in the library and book stores, remember them??? How sad is that???
