I am a firm believer in "if it isn't broke, don't fix it". I run a Win XP Pro system with CS2. I convert my Sony RAW images to tiff with an older version of Sony IDC. I works very well.
The only other plug-in that I use is PTLens. I rarely go online with that system so security is not an issue. I also have later PC's that run win 7 pro without problems. Win 10 on the other hand was nothing but problems for me....downgraded to 7, which is supported until 2020.

My Windows 10 update also caused some issues with Lightroom... mainly it was the graphic processor and the need to also update my GPU drivers. Then after updating the GPU, Adobe also had updates. Having stated all of this, everything was handled correctly by all of the software publishers... Microsoft released an update... 1 day later, GForce notified me of their update, and about the same time, my Adobe Cloud notified me of updates to most of their software. Everything now works fine again. Yes, I did have a few issues for about 2 hours (until I turned off GPU in the Lightroom preferences... and then after everything was "fixed" I turned it back on). On your computer, everything is a balance between the OS (Windows or Apple), any video processors and other hardware devices, and the software. I also had some issues with many of my other software programs, especially Civilization and other heavily graphics intensive programs.

You can use Nikon View NXi or Canon Zoombrowser. You can select single or multiple images and choose size. It will open your mail program and attach. Very simple.

Personally, I have to disagree that Windows 10 is the best. I have Dell laptop that according to Dell fully supports Win 10. Every time there is an update, it fails on it. Furthermore, Win 10 has a lot of "stuff" that I will never use and cannot delete. Also took away things that I like to use. I got so frustrated that I went back to Win 7 pro and have been happy ever since.
BTW, I am a computer person with lots of experience. I am frustrated with Windows enough that I am converted everything to Mac.

As has been said, Win 10 is the best Windows ever. Technology marches on and we have very little choice but to follow if we want to do the things our computer is supposed to do for us. The same goes for the LR updates. Yes, you need them. Always.

What exactly does the message say about "not being adequate"? Can you grab a screen shot of the message? That would help.

I have an iMac 2011 in my other home that has worked flawlessly. I just purchased another 2011 iMac for my 2nd home (It was the last model with a built in dvd, that I use).
It was refurbished by "isellmac" on eBay for ~$400. 60 day warranty. I am very pleased with it.

My Imac, circa 2011, finally has given up the ghost. The internal drive crashed years ago and I have been booting from an external drive. It is (was) a 21.5 display. I really loved it. I knew it would die and pass on soon, so, I knew I better get a new computer soon.

18 months ago then, I purchased a Lenovo touch screen desktop that I thought would be a good computer. It is okay. Has a decent processor, 8 mg memory, (not enough) and 1tb internal drive. I do have back up drives. I never use the touch screen. The display is okay but really does not give a good reproduction of what I am doing in my photo editing.
I was using both the Imac and Lenovo for different tasks.

So I am thinking of purchasing a new Imac. Features have really expanded since I last researched them.
Do I need a 27 inch display?
All basic models come with 8mg but I will upgrade to 16.
Processor speed? Do I really need something terribly fast if all I am using is Photoshop or LR?
Some models come with retina display. Is that really an advantage?
Most of my photos are exported to Smug or Nikon Image Space. My printer is limited (currently) to 11.5 x 8, unless I send out for printing to a commercial lab.
I prefer to print in B&W.
What recommendations would you suggest for a computer.
My budget needs to be less than $1500.

You may want to try the above. Says it will work for Win 10

I just discovered (painfully!) that my Nikon COOLSCAN V ED scanner, the really expensive one with all the bells and whistles (and expensive accessories) no longer works with the latest version of Windows on my PC. This seems to have happened after Windows latest 'update' was automatically installed.

To add insult, the good folks at Nikon want nothing to do with me – or rather, nothing to do with this scanner. Several calls to Nikon Customer Service and the best I got was:“We no longer support it!”

The scanner still is in fine working condition, except we (ie: PC, me and it) are no longer communicating. Tried removing and re-installing the original program disc that came with it. Nada.

Seems like there should be an easy 'fix' out there.

Any suggestions?

I have the same scanner. I use VueScan (paid version). It is available for Mac, Windows or Linux. It works well on all OS,s I have tried it on(Win 7 pro. Mac OS High Sierra and Ubuntu 16.04). It worked on Win 10 while I had it I trashed Win 10 because of many problems after the last update. Once you purchase it you can install on any computer you have.

I use SD card to lightning adapter to load photos onto ipad air. It does not change file name. It loads fairly quickly, also. I'm not sure what card your Canon uses.

After a few months of lurking, this is my first post.

I plan on traveling with Canon dslrs. An iPad mini looks like a lightweight alternative to a laptop for reviewing, editing and backing up photos while traveling.

I purchased an Apple USB3 to Lighning Camera Adapter and downloaded a few jpeg files from CF card to the ipad mini.
(Once I copied the files to the iPad for review I planned on uploading them to Smugmug (or other site) for backup and later processing.)

At first it looked great but then I realized that ALL THE FILE NAMES HAD BEEN CHANGED to (very long) random file names. This would be a nightmare in post processing.

Is anyone using an iPad mini for this purpose with success?

Thanks,

Overcrowding is an understatement! Thanks to destination marketing. I have been in Sedona for many years and destination marketing has all but ruined it. Overcrowding and traffic jams during Spring break are awful. They keep trying to fix the traffic problems...no place for new roads, etc. You can't fit 50 lbs. into a 5 lb. sack

Thanks all, I just found out that as of 1/1/18 there will be NO photo tours in Lower Antelope by any of the tour companies due to extreme over crowding....that's a shame....they'll let me take in a camera but no tripod or help from them...Bummer

I made the trip 2 years ago. Unfortunately is was during Spring Break. I did the regular tour because some non photo friends were along. It was a zoo!. I felt sorry for the photographers tour...they were there at the same time. The Navajo guides were trying to clear the way for them. The young tourists and their #$%* selphie sticks were getting in the way. You should have heard what the guide was going to do with their sticks. I did get some good shots w/o a tripod. I would not consider going there on Spring Break (Feb. -Mar.),,,it was way too crowded. Fortunately I only live a few hours from there and can go anytime.

Okay just saying that over the years you have amassed 15+(film/digital) cameras or so, different brands, for arguments sake- 3 Sony. 6 Canon, a couple Pentax, and 10 Nikon (2 SLR) / would you use them all, any favorites, or any?

Have you ever used any of them?

If so what would be your favorite? If so why?

Favorite subject matter?

Would you post your work on a site like this? If not where?

Should each camera get equal air time for the same subject matter under the same conditions?

Is this a valid question?

I would not buy one without a viewfinder any more. I have one without(Nikon P7700) and shoot action movies of dog agility competition. I have messed up some because of sun on the screen and can't see what I'm shooting.

I'm a relative beginner and have a question about mirrorless cameras: Why is there a separate viewfinder from the large 3' screen?
In other words, why isn't the 3' screen sufficient for focusing, zoom, etc. After all, its image is exactly what the sensor sees.
I was looking through the viewfinder on a mirrorless camera at a store, and found the view through the eyepiece tedious and a source of eye strain. Also it had multi level menus, which I would think more easily dealt with on the main 3' screen. Ok, maybe the shutter has something to do with this?

Thank you for this post and wishing you the best. I have at times been reluctant to post because of the "intolerance" of some members.

I am not new to photography. The one thing that often surprises me, is how rude, nasty and mean some of the people...mostly men...are on this site. I tend to picture an old man, in his underwear, alone, lonely and posting negative comments.

Some people feel they have to criticize, insult, make rude remarks, make fun of, etc, when people post something. They do this even if they aren't even interested in the topic.

This is not always a friendly site. There are people that are very helpful, but the rude ones take away from that.

"Whatever you do, don't look in your manual or visit the Nikon site."
"I've always wondered how the human can be so naïve, such that their brain thinks $174.99 is far less expensive than $175. "
"I think too many sellers on UHH have an inflated opinion of what their old, unwanted equipment is worth."

I would like to request in 2018, that those people hold back on their negative comments.
If you don't have something nice to say, don't post anything.

There are newbies here, to both photography and to the use of the computer. Yes, it is easy to say, *just google it* but there is a way to say it without being mean about it. That might not be the first thing someone thinks about when they are trying to get some information.

We all share a love of photography, lets be kind to one another, be helpful, or don't help at all.

Wishing all a Healthy & Happy Holiday.
