Well, Thomas, I may have stepped in it again! I had the Nikon 24-85 3.5-4.5, non-vr version which I used on my D 7100. I noticed it was not really sharp during a shoot at my Granddaughter's wedding.
At 82, I figured the lack of VR was the culprit...although I was using a shutter speed above the minimum for the lens. I have bought a Nikon 24-120 f/4 with VR, hoping it will give a bit more steadiness to the endeavour.
I should have it next week, and we will see.
The Sigma seems like a fantastic lens, and reports of much better build quality than earlier may make it a goood choice, if the Nikon doesn't work out.
Well, Thomas, I may have stepped in it again! I ha... (show quote)

Thomas is right...the Sigma is a superior lens...my go to on my D7xxx when I had them and then my D500. I preferred this setup to my 24-120 on full frame camera when I had it. Perhaps I didn't do enough homework but I listed my copy for $275. Apparently a sweet deal as it is in a 9+ condition. I am original owner, have box etc. Kim

Popularity is a reason to buy? What can you do with a mirrorless you can't do with a D850?

With Sony - Eye tracking and 30 fps for Birds - which is a focus for me in my photography and travels. With a 2nd injury to my other shoulder in August, Im done waiting out Nikon. Probably the biggest factor is the Sony 600mm weighs half of what the Nikon one does. Yes, I know the rumor is Nikon will get the Z9 to market along with a host of lens by the end of next year....maybe. This is my bucket list life as I inch (ok, fly) towards 65 next year. Despite my daily efforts to remain fit enough to travel with this type of gear, my body has made it clear it's time for a change. In support of Nikon, the D850 is my most fav. camera - ever. And it is excruciatingly painful to part with it. For now, I have decided to keep it and the 500mm. I am not sure when the Sony 600mm will be available. Availability is an issue for all but at least Sony is available and shipping. Aging Sucks!

If you change your mind let me know. I also have the D850. Its a great camera although it may be a bit of a dinosaur give the advances and new found popularity of the new mirrorless cameras.

Will do. Nothing beats the D850.
