1. What initially attracted you to photography?
Having a professional photographer for a Dad.
When I reached my teens, it could also be handy to have a Dad for a professional photographer.
2. What do you do or want to do with your photography?
With my photography: take the best pictures possible.
With my photos: cherish them for the memories, especially with the grandkids.
3. Do you have a photographic style that is recognizable by others or simply defines your photography.
No. Although Dad did. I could tell a picture was taken by him easily. My cousin found that out, when he tried
to tell me a photo he had was taken by his neighbour. Told him to turn the photo over. Sure enough, the
stamp on the back was my Dad's.
Since I discovered that I can have my photos with stories printed in book, I take many photos with a possibly book in mind.

[quote=Fstop12]Went to a local park to check out the fall leaf colors. Hmm, where are they? Usually this time of year they are in full color.

You must be in the wrong spot on this earth. I'm in south British Columbia, Canada (not very far from Vancouver) and the trees right in front of our house are showing the most beautiful reds, yellows and oranges.
I have no idea what these trees are, will stop at city hall this week and see if they can tell me.
Of course my camera isn't home just now - grandson asked to borrow it for a school project!

Remember when a 1 meg hard drive was a big deal? And the prices were double and triple then for almost any computer stuff...

I don't remember a 1mb hard drive. The first computer I ever used had a huge 30mb hard drive.
Windows version? What Windows.... I had to learn DOS.
"Fortunately" I had four sons who were more than willing to teach Mom what to do and how to do it... would have been nice if all four had given me the same instructions to achieve the same result.
After a few weeks of that, I waited till they were at school or doing their homework in their room, pulled out the handbook and figured out for myself what to do and how.
Guess what... after a number of months the boys came to me to ask questions about the computer, especially after Win3.1 was installed on that computer.
We're now this many years later and the boys will still occasionally ask me, "Mom, how......
I'll tell them I don't know their computer, get their manual out or search for it on-line.
Yes, I know, I'm a mean Mom!

He talks too much.

I'm so glad I don't shoot pictures for money. I have no one to please but myself.

and to annoy the grandkids: Oma, I didn't want my picture taken!! Well then, child, don't walk in front of my camera!

I like to use the screen to compose pictures when I'm trying to "catch" the grandkids - or other children, or animals in a photo. They are so used to my lifting the camera to my eye to take a photo that if the camera is away from my face, they don't think that I'm taking their picture. Having the remote release cable makes it even easier.
Having said that, a camera without a view-finder is a no-go for me. From the very first time my Dad let me use his camera, he also taught me to push the camera against my forehead for stability. And this many years later, I am still doing that!
Yes, I have a cell-phone, and occasionally I will take a picture with it. I have yet to get a picture from my cell that doesn't have any motion-blur in it.
I have an Olympus OM-D E-M1 mk3 now, and hopefully it will last as long as I will last! I can use it handheld against my forehead, or sitting on a table, the floor, a chair, even on a tripod, all with the remote cable.
The older grandkids have caught on, but they have also learned to pay no attention.
The younger grandkids will eventually catch on, hopefully after they learn not to pay attention!
With one of the grandkids, bribery worked: If you sit still and don't pull faces when I want to take your picture, I'll let you borrow my camera once in a while!
It worked, and he has already proven to be very carefull with my camera!

I was reading all the replies to the post "camera on or off " . And it seems everyone carries a spare battery when out shooting . How many pictures do you guys shoot to use up a battery ??
I know every camera is different but on a big day, I've shot close to 500 pics and still had plenty of battery life left with both my Nikon D5100 and my D7200. I've never needed to use a spare battery. Just curious .

When I go out, I take not just my camera, but grab the bag. This way I have everything I may need: spare battery, filters, lens, notebook and pencil.....
Yes, it makes the bag fairly heavy, but the strap fits comfortably over my right shoulder with the bag on the left side.
If I haven't used the camera for a bit - right now not going out much - I will check the batteries every two weeks or so.
Oh, and if we go on vacation, by car usually, I take a second, smaller bag, to hold battery charger, cleaning cloth and liquid, and other stuff.

I have Elements 14, don’t need to upgrade but I’m thinking about getting Elements+ to go with it. Saw a video on the Curves features and it seems that would be worth it right there. What’s your experience with it?

I haven't used Elements since my hard drive gave up a little while ago. But for a number of year I did use Elements and Elements+ together. To me it was well worth it. And E+ is cheap compared to some other add-ons.
I am using my laptop right now, hope to get a new computer soon, and among the first items to install will be Elements and Elements+

Why Should you? I haven't measured but in my eye the towers are pretty well straight up and down.
In some areas the land is sloping, leave well enough alone!
It's a perfectly good photo they way it is, I like it!

This is my practice model...she is kind of stoic but cooperates.

Great idea to use her for practice. Wish my grandkids would cooperate like that!

Now, being a woman and having been a very picky dressmaker for many years, I have just one little comment:
Before you use her again for a model, make sure all the hairs from her face are gone.
In this sample, the one across the bridge of her nose.
I know I am being picky, but one of these days you may be using live models and then you really have to watch out for these little things...
Otherwise: Well done!

just got an Epson V850 scanner; 1st attempt at scanning 35 negs years ago resulted in 2 low a resolution when I sent negs to print labs; suggestions appreciated

lot of 35 negs badly curled; only suggestion I found on web is to wet them and hang them with weights; this was not successful - anyone have a better idea ?

I went to a frame shop, and bought a piece of non-glare glass. I covered the edges with strong packing tape (the kind that looks like there are threads woven into the tape). On the corners I left the tape an inch or so longer than the edge of the glass, to have "handles" for picking up the piece from the scanner. Then put the negatives on the scanner, piece of glass on top of them, and scanned.
BTW, also kept glass-cleaner and wipes handy. In spite of the "handles" I still managed to get fingerprints on the glass and certainly did not want them to show on the scans.

I'm not surprised at the parts. I'm surprised that they knew where to put back all the parts they took off.

Someone with patience can do it!! My Dad had a Norton motorbike, bought from a military surplus store. He got himself a notebook and took the bike apart. Everything he took off he described in his notebook, gave it a number and put the pieces in that numerical order on his workbench. He cleaned every piece, painted the army-green parts black, and endured jokes from neighbours and friends: "You really think you're getting that motorbike back together and ride it?"
It took him 6 - 8 months, but thanks to his meticulous note taking, yes! he got it back together and rode it for quite a few years after that. One of the trips he made was from Rotterdam (where we were living at the time) to Cologne and back, a trip I remember well as I went with him!
So yes, it is possible to take something apart and put it back together and get it working again!
I imagine that with a camera and much smaller parts it would be a lot more difficult.

You’re right…and I generally do use much larger cards.
Here’s the back story: I was on vacation and found the 8mb card in its case buried in a pocket of my camera bag. I had no idea what, if anything, was on it so I put in the
camera to check it out and got the messages I reported. I generally find manuals user “unfriendly” but I checked it and came to the same conclusion as you…and others have pointed out. My only take is that the card goes back to my older LUMIX FZ so when I get back home I’ll check the card in that camera. But I’m good now!
You’re right…and I generally do use much larger ca... (show quote)

I think I might be tempted to have that 8mb card framed and then treat it as a museum piece....

It’s definitely 8mb….and very old. Other cards work fine.

I am not familiar with your camera at all, however, I looked up the manual on-line.
If I interpreted what I read there correctly, the lowest quality and smallest size image your camera will take is just over 9 mb. With the card being 8 mb, there is not enough space to record an image and the card will send a message "I'm full".
Then, when you try to play back, you'll get the message "no image" -because there was not enough space to record an image.
The solution of course is easy: get a (much) larger card.

Thank you all so much for your replies! I found it thanks to the mention of Viewscan.
The name was not familiar to me, so Googled it, and that took me to Vuescan:
https://www.google.com/search?client=firefox-b-d&q=vuescan
On the right of this page is a block with some information, and "People also search for"... Bingo!
The first icon is for Silverfast - and that's the name that had completely escaped me!
This aftenoon I will go to their website and see if I can order the program from there!
Again: Thank you all so much for your help! I don't know if I would have found it without that help!

Wow! $900 refurbished. Sounds great but out of my affordability.

Wow!! That really has gone up in price. I don't remember exactly when I bought mine, likely some 5-8 years ago, and I paid around CAD 750 for it then - and new, not refurbished.
