There's a sensor puck you mount on the screen to read color patches that the software displays on the screen. This helps you calibrate the display. Then the software reads R,G,B, and gray (R+B+G) "ramps" or "scales" and calculates an ICC profile from the feedback through the puck.
Similar tools are available from XRITE and others.
I probably should mention that printer and paper manufacturers tend to publish generic profiles for their printers and papers. They work pretty well, although if you have the time, knowledge, stamina, and patience, you can make better ones yourself.
