Lots of folks like the 16-80mm f/2.8-4. I felt like it was too mediocre and too expensive, and in my area (Dallas), used ones have sold for almost as much as new ones. To me, $500-600 is a much more reasonable price than $1100 for that lens.

I've used a Nikkor 17-55mm f/2.8 for close to 15 years as my primary lens on every Nikon DX camera, starting with my D200. It's an old design, but is a very good lens and was still in production very recently. The drawback is that it is pretty heavy.

My current DX "utility" lens is a Nikkor 24-120mm f/4 that I ordered from NikonUSA during a recent refurbished sale for less than $500. It is the full frame equivalent of the 16-80, but seems to me to be a much better lens. Nice used ones are readily available for about $450. It may not be as wide as what you prefer, but for me, it works great. I took it as my only DX lens on a week-long trip last week with railroad shooting outings, and it was perfect.

The 16-80 is the most direct replacement, but you will need to decide what focal lenght range will serve you best if you wish to consider one of the other options. There are a number of third party lenses that might work for you, but I cannot speak to those. Best wishes as you look, and as you decide.

I have a Nikon D7200 which I love. One of the lenses that I have is a Nikon ED AF-S Nikkor 24-85 1:3.5-4.5 G. It is an ok lens but not as sharp as I would like. I would like to replace it with a comparable zoom that is sharper. I know price determines the quality and I am trying not to break the bank in this terrible inflationary time so I would like some recommendations. Used is OK and does not have to be Nikon brand. Suggestions?

In this era of computer designed and ground lenses it would be really unusual to have a less than extent lens - but it could happen - try photographing something like a newspaper or a billboard with your camera on a tripod, using the timed release and see if the problem is the lens - if not think about things like a dirty lens, camera shake, or stray light hitting your lens (no lens shade - the one I use cost $450)

Thanks, I'll try that.

The reviews on the Sigma seem pretty good. You may want to rent/borrow one first. Could be the photographer who was using the Sigma is a better photographer. Did you actually see any of their work?

No, did not see any of his work so I guess that isn't the best referral for a lens. That's why I am asking the experts here for opinions.

I have a AF-S Nikkor 24-85 lens for my D7200 which I use fairly regularly. It is ok but not the sharpest lens. I recently ran into a photographer who was using a Sigma 24-105 who said he loved it and it was very sharp. Since this is a fairly expensive lens (for me at least), any suggestions on where I can pick up a good used Sigma? Also other opinions about this lens?

bobburk3 Nikon empowered the D7100 & D7200 with a feature for those who work in a studio.
Typically the highest syc speed for the on-board flash is 1/320 which does NOT work for many studio strobes that lack HSS.

To this end if you go into your Controls Menu under (e) Bracketing / flash is you can set a more appropriate Sync of 1/250 (or as most of the commercial shooters I assist choose 1/200 to avoid any miss-fires that do actually happen)

Now in Manual rotate your Shutter Command Dial all the way too the camera left and you'll see 1/200 x locked into both Manual and Shutter Mode. This is a priceless/precious feature the avoids you accidentally changing the SS during an intense studio session where you have a full team yelling at you to "do this' or "do that".

It so important that my D3x has a button of top of the camera to "Lock" this control... but then again the D3x is a studio camera... :)

Glad you get this handled...
All the best on your photographic journey!

Oh my gosh!!!! You are a genius. So simple a solution and I totally missed it and never would have thought of it if you hadn't suggested it.

May be it's in the Green A mode and the flash is up because you have the camera in a dark place.

I don't think so. I have been shooting all day off and on in bright sunny settings in Manual mode. Apparently I inadvertently changed a setting and now I can't go above 1/60.

That's what I thought but I couldn't find the setting.

I must have changed a setting in my Nikon 7200 and now I can not get the shutter speed to go above 1/60. When I look in the window at the top of the camera, there is a small x next to the shutter speed when the shutter speed is 1/60. HELP

Well I am a beginner. I am quite happy with my photos. I have won a 2 photo contests online (beginner contests). Maybe I am in the wrong group here. Not use to being jumped all over everytime I post something. 😕

I think he asked all those questions because RAW images are typically NOT better than JPEG without some editing. So he is simply wondering how you account for your RAW images being better that your JPG images. I don't think he is being critical, just curious about your technique.

Let me make a correction to the title. I am using a Nikon D7200 and considering the Sigma lenses.

For silky zoom look into cine lenses.

Don’t know how smoothly that Sigma may zoom, but on an F your exposure will be changing as you zoom. That is not allowed in cine lenses.

Not good to have the f stop change as you zoom. I had read that in a couple other reviews of the lens. Thanks for your input.

I am interested in adding a short telephoto lens for everyday walking around and landscape shooting. I like to zoom with a long exposure for creative effects so I need smooth zooming, not jerky zooming. I am also looking for a sharper lens than my current AF-S NIKKOR 24-85 1:3.5-4.5G lens which has a jerky zoom and is pretty sharp but not as sharp as I would like. Any opinions on the Sigma lens mentioned in the title would be greatly appreciated. Also any suggestions for other lenses in this price range would be appreciated.
