I am interested in adding a short telephoto lens for everyday walking around and landscape shooting. I like to zoom with a long exposure for creative effects so I need smooth zooming, not jerky zooming. I am also looking for a sharper lens than my current AF-S NIKKOR 24-85 1:3.5-4.5G lens which has a jerky zoom and is pretty sharp but not as sharp as I would like. Any opinions on the Sigma lens mentioned in the title would be greatly appreciated. Also any suggestions for other lenses in this price range would be appreciated.

For silky zoom look into cine lenses.

Don’t know how smoothly that Sigma may zoom, but on an F your exposure will be changing as you zoom. That is not allowed in cine lenses.

Not good to have the f stop change as you zoom. I had read that in a couple other reviews of the lens. Thanks for your input.

Don’t use it wide open.
If you use f/4 or smaller with the Sigma, you’ll be good through the whole range.

I have been using this lens in Canon mount for about 6 years now - it is a very GOOD lens - IMO, BETTER than the reviews I have read ....and yes, it IS smooth.

How does that apply to the OP’s use? Guess it won’t matter cuz that lens is useless on three counts anywho:
1. Zoom
2. Aperture
3. Format

Both you and the OP were concerned that the exposure would change as the lens was zoomed since it wasn’t a constant aperture lens.
It won’t be an issue if the OP uses f/4 or a smaller aperture.

Very good suggestion re: cine lenses, but those are going to be out of the OP’s price range.

Context ? He says it’s for Nikon F.

No aperture will be constant on an F.

Edit: There is mention of his current afs-g lens. Now nothing makes any sense. There’s no way to set an aperture on an old Nikon.

At 2.8 it won’t be from f-4 and smaller it will be.

The title says Nikon F, so that is wrong. Every aperture will vary with the FL.

But deeper into the details he is using an AFS-G lens, so either it’s NOT an F, or he just shoots wide open all the time.

This makes no sense.

Soooo...you are assuming he is using a Nikon F (the camera) and not a Nikon F mount?

He is asking about a cropped sensor Sigma lens so why would he be considering that for a full frame film camera and not a cropped sensor digital?

I’ve read several of the OP’s past posts and only a Nikon D7200 is mentioned, which would be the way this seems probable, unless, as you said, he is shooting wide open all the time.

So......bobburk3....what are you really shooting with?
Is the Nikon F a red herring?
I like what I see in your posts, particularly the MGA.

I currently have the Sigma 17-50mm, f/2.8 and it is a great lens, and the continuous 2.8 works well in almost all conditions.

The Tam 17-50 2.8 is a grate walk around if I might add my 2 cents.

Some of the better zooms that cross the "normal" focal length have two different sets of movements...one on the wide angle side, and a different one on the telephoto side. I know for certain that my Nikkor 17-55 f/2.8 DX does this at around 35mm, and my 24-70mm f/2.8 full frame does it somewhere around 45mm. It does not have any impact on optical perfornance, but you can feel the shift in the zoom ring if the camera is not level. It seems to be because the lens extends both when approaching the wide end and the telephoto end. This might be something to check for in any lens you are condideting. Lower grade lenses seem more likely to move continuously when zoomed from one end to the other and do not demonstrate this same behavior in most cases.
