The Tam 17-50 2.8 is a grate walk around if I might add my 2 cents.
I always walk around grates.
Maybe just superstition.

I am interested in adding a short telephoto lens for everyday walking around and landscape shooting. I like to zoom with a long exposure for creative effects so I need smooth zooming, not jerky zooming. I am also looking for a sharper lens than my current AF-S NIKKOR 24-85 1:3.5-4.5G lens which has a jerky zoom and is pretty sharp but not as sharp as I would like. Any opinions on the Sigma lens mentioned in the title would be greatly appreciated. Also any suggestions for other lenses in this price range would be appreciated.

Great lens, IMHO, use it on my Rebels quite frequently!

I’ve had the Sigma 17-70mm for many years. I don’t often use it because it’s a little short for BIF, for which I use the Sigma 17-300mm, but it takes excellent images and is very smooth. I don’t know if I have the Contemporary versions.
I use this lens on a Canon body. It is excellent. I don't do video, so I can't definitively comment, BUT the variable aperture is from f2.8 to f4. That's nor much over 17-70mm zoom. And stopped down to f4, there is no variability at all.
This also has "Macro" close focusing abilities. That has enabled me to get close ups of details, flowers, etc.
I have used the longer focal lengths for portraits with excellent results, and decent Bokeh for backgrounds several feet behind the subject. I had one stolen and promptly replaced it. So nice I bought it twice! The Canon offerings and I assume Nikon, too can't hold a candle especially at the $400 price I paid at the time(s).

PS: OS works really well, too.
I agree with Miked46, also have the Sig 17-50 F2.8, great lens, all the other glass may go eventually but will always keep this guy

I have been using this lens in Canon mount for about 6 years now - it is a very GOOD lens - IMO, BETTER than the reviews I have read ....and yes, it IS smooth.
.
The other thing I will say about this lens is it has focus breathing at close up range - that is, the 70mm at close range acts more like a 50mm, ie about 2 1/2 inches from the front of the lens a MFD @ 70mm.

Not good to have the f stop change as you zoom. I had read that in a couple other reviews of the lens. Thanks for your input.
The fstop usually doesn't change with zoom unless you are at the maximum aperture. In the case of this lens, if you use F4 or smaller the aperture will not change as you zoom. I use several zooms, some change the max aperture, others do not. I honestly can't say that using a variable max aperture lens has presented any issues for me.
Let me make a correction to the title. I am using a Nikon D7200 and considering the Sigma lenses.
