Shine, I like the first one better and love how you captured this man so well. One of these days I wish you'd add a little narrative on the characters you shoot, where you found them etc, as I'd enjoying knowing more. Anyway, nice image as always.

Hi waltchilds ... I don't really want to get to know my subjects as I think it would upset them
More than they are by telling me why they are in their present situations ..
I tend to chat enough just to get what I want and then move on..
I have yet to meet the same person twice..
I try and carry my camera with me , so varying locations and countries..

I really like this photo. It has a rugged, somewhat sad aura. I have looked at it many times.

Unfortunately, one of our badly cared for immigrants..

Yes, that is what I was referring to. It was very touching. I'm off to a wedding at Terrace on the Park tonight. Very Hoity Toity Fancy Delancy. Should I bring my camera and add it to the Jewish Life Series? What say you? :)

I would love to see the wedding shots!

I am not insulted in the least, Russ. I got an honest and educated critique from some one with whose opinion I really respect. I really appreciate the thoroughness. Now then:

Wow! I thought I did good. I never thought about the nose breaking the plane of the cheek. I will have to read up on that. I am really amazed that I am so far off base in so many ways. I thought I nailed it. It was a spur of the moment thing on my part. I could not pose this. I thought my tonal separation was real good. I guess not. I thought being colorblind had its' advantages here. I also thought that I had a good separation from the background. I was wrong again.
Try and repost taking all points into consideration , don't rush it Tom, it could take weeks !!!... Or even months ... It's a learning curve that never ends !
I remember clearly what you taught me a long time ago about doing a 180 taking several shots. I do not know how I could have done this here without disturbing the moment.

I took time in this in post. I thought I pulled out the textures rather well. I guess not. I left the lighting on her nose just the way it was thinking that it added to the overall lighting. Wrong on that point also. I also thought the crop to be good. Wrong again! I had plenty of options with that one. I had no choice about her attire. I could change some of that in post, I suppose.

I could go along and reason out with you why I did what I did with each point that you brought out in hopes that you would at least know my reasoning behind my efforts, but that would take too long.

Long story short; this is exactly the type of critique I was looking for. I have no pride to swallow. You know damn well that I am serious about improving. "Good job" aint going to cut it!

Thank you very much, Russ, for taking the time for such an in depth response.

Tom
