Do not know Canon, but on Nikon telephoto lenses there is an addition position on the VR switch, called 'active'. Main purpose I am told is for photographing from an unsteady or moving vehicle. Mine (active) worked well from a door off helicopter flight.

Thanks Bear2. Don't see anything like that on my lens, just the Image Stabilizer, which they recommend you switch off when using a tripod.

I think that Greece should demand that Germany should pay the reparation money for the damage they did to Greece when they occupied their country in the last war!!

The Greeks received US$105 million from Italy and US$50 million from Bulgaria after the war. In 1960 Greece accepted 115million Marks from Germany in full and final compensation from Germany. That seems like an awful lot of money. Now they are broke, and are trying for more. Maybe if the Greeks started to pay their taxes, it would help their economy.

How, do you suggest, that Greece should react to Germany?

If I knew the answer, I'd be very rich and powerful and somewhere other than here!

I am hoping to be able to photograph a total solar eclipse from a cruise liner near the Faroe Islands on March 20th. I mentioned this in an earlier thread, only I got myself muddled and called it a lunar eclipse instead. A very kind “hogger” from a far distant country has been corresponding with me about this and offering good advice, but I wondered whether any other UHH people have actually seen and photographed a total solar eclipse from a ship rather than on land and, if so, what tips and practical advice in order to counteract wave/engine/people movement? I have bought a solar filter to attach to the hood of my Canon 100-400mm lens plus 1.4 extender and I have been practicing (whenever the sun comes out here in the UK!) and attach a photo. And I have been bracketing photos -/+ 0.7. But I feel it will be a whole new ball game on how keep things sharp on a ship tossing around in the North Sea in March!

The most significant effect of sharpening, and the reason it is beneficial for virtually every photograph, is to increase acutance that is low because of the matrix size used to demoisaic images made with a Bayer Color Filter Array. The Bayer Filter means that no tonal edge transition can be acomplished in less than 4 to 6 pixels across any linear distance (and generally the number is closer to 10 or 12 pixels).

Could you please say that in English? !!!

And where are you supposed to sunbathe? You don't seem to be able to get up to the front of the boat (no gangway up the sides) and every place on the back of the boat covered over. All that money, and no tan?

Watch the videos at http://www.canon.com/camera-museum/tech/l_plant/ for example.

That is an amazing video. No wonder the lens costs so much - I want one! Price today at Amazon is £6,899.00. So dream on!!

I am in the planning stages of an 8 week history/photography trip along the French and Belgium Front Lines of World War 1 beginning in early May. I will be travelling primarily by bicycle which severely limits what I can carry.

The weight of a laptop and battery would be excessive and tablets do not have the capacity to store the large quantities of photographs anticipated. Large quantities of SD cards, while certainly light enough, would be awkward, expensive and too easily lost.

I'm sure other Hogs have experienced similar situations where size and weight of storage is a factor so I am appealing for your help and suggestions in this matter.

What do you use for large quantity photo storage on extended trips? Thanks for your help.

I use a Canon portable hard drive, called Media Storage M80. I've had it for years, and it wasn't cheap then, but I think much less money now. It takes thousands of photos literally, of large jPegs from a 5Dmii, , and I have never even filled it half full over long trips abroad. Very reliable, and only 5 inches by 3 inches. Newer models are probably smaller and lighter. Worth investigating and/or looking at other manufacturers' models.

Check out photos of the new FF Sony lenses to be announced tomorrow (Friday) at the CP+ show. They are posted on the "sonyalpharumors" website.

The lenses are huge. Disproportionately massive. I've been waiting for a Sony FF superwide zoom, and was looking forward to the new 24-240mm. Until I saw the picture of it this morning. It's so big as to remove all the advantages of the A7 in terms of size and weight.

The idea of the Sony A7 line has been great. But the lenses, not so much. Very limited selection, high prices, and now, very bulky.

I'm glad I kept my Canon gear while waiting for a good, all purpose Sony zoom. I may have made a mistake with Sony, and recommend that you think long and hard before committing.

Thanks, Newsbob. I'm in no hurry, and very much inclined to stick with my 5Dii and have the a6000 as my back-up.

My wife and I have hiked the Tour of Mont Blanc twice. It is a 105 mile 11 day trek with accommodation in mountain refuges and occasionally in small hotels in villages. We carried all our gear in our backpacks and since we are now both 70 we try to limit the weight. We are planning on hiking the GR5 (Geneva to Nice - actually we will only walk half which should take about 14 days). After this long preamble, I will get to the point!
We have a Canon S90 which we bought in 2010 and found it great for trekking because it fits in a small case which I can attach to my clavicle strap and can access it without difficulty. Last year we bought a D7100 and enjoy it but it is both too bulky and too heavy for our proposed trek.
My question is whether we would benefit from an upgrade to our S90? Generally we would be interested in landscapes in good light. Our experience is that long telephotos are not very useful for this application.
I know the Canon SX50 is a great camera (my son-in-law has one) but too bulky for carrying on a clavicle strap.
I would appreciate any suggestions. Would successors to the S90 offer much advantage?
I would like to keep under $500 and am comfortable with refurbished. I like to shoot in raw.
We wrote a report of our experience and a link follows:

I'm looking forward to your suggestions.

Sonya6000. I don't know what it costs in the US, but it is under £500 now in the UK. Wonderful camera, I took it to China, plus a Canon 5D Mkii and used the Sony almost exclusively. Very fast focus, very sharp, very light.

Hi All, I have two telephoto lens. The filter sizes are 77mm and 82mm and I bought a circular polarizing filter for the larger size (82mm) and a conversion ring so that it could be used on the smaller as well without vignetting.
I found out the first time that I could not use the lens hood for the smaller lens (77mm) as it will not go on with the larger conversion ring being used. Is this my trade-off not lens hood for the smaller lens? Or is there something I'm missing here.
Thanks!

I can't see how you could use a CP with a lens hood on: it would certainly make it far more difficult to rotate the CP. I never use a lens hood when using a CP and you probably should not need it anyway because the CP works best at a 90 degree angle from the sun, so you don't get lens flare anyway.

I asked a similar question, and am still wondering whether to change. I already have the a6000, but was wondering about the A7 in one of its three forms, or the A7II. I shall watch what people reply to you with interest!
