Hi, first time forum experience ever. Here goes.
I am helping my wife begin a new 2 year project and will need to edit Raw panoramas from a Lumix DMC-FZ70 (20mm wide-angle). Unfortunately, the subjects (huge, antique trees) will be back-lit (South facing moutaintop), hence the expected need for postproduction burning, dodging, HDR, etc. I understand I need to underexpose (-.33?) for later recovering shadow details, but blown highlights will be lost forever versus film. She will be using a pistol grip monopod with 90 deg. swivel for vertical panoramas.
My understanding is that FastStone will support the Raw files from the Lumix DMC-FZ70 and some think it is much better than Silkypix (which is recommended by Panasonic and seems ok). I will be editing on an older MacBookPro3,1. My postproduction experience is relegated to iPhoto, but I used to do a fair amount of film years ago.
Filters? I'm planing on purchasing a B+W 55mm Clear UV Haze with Multi-Resistant Coating (010M). Note that the Panasonic lens exhibits severe lens flare when shooting towards the sun.
Difficult project, thanks in advance.

As the tree is the main subject of the photograph, I suggest you spot meter on the tree (unless you need surroundings as well to put the tree in context).
I would suggest that LightRoom would be one of the best RAW converters you could use.
