I took some bird pictures on my back deck. Days latter I took the camera, using the same memory card, and went on a wildlife trip. The picture from the trip seemed to be recorded din a separate folder. when I got home the trip photos downloaded as usual, but the deck photos did not. None of the deck photos were that special so I formatted the card. The trip pictures were gone, but the deck photos remained. I repeated the process with antther nature trip. Same result. Trip photos downloaded and then were formatted off the card. The earlier deck pictures did not download and would not disappear when the card was formatted.

How is this explained? Can I totally clean the card, including the original deck photos?

Yes, I got the same thing. I paid for Popular Photography, not Popular Science. I will be calling and demanding a refund for the remainder of my subscription. There was no warning to this either as far as I know. So typical to today's dishonest business practices. No one can convince me that the magazine went belly up over night; it was something planned well in advance and the truth was held from us. Personally, I will find out every magazine this publisher publishes and I will never buy into a single one of their products in the future.
