The sharpness of these images is amazing. I wish that I could do that.

I owe a lot of my success to my equipment. I use a Sony A57 (16MP) camera with a Sony 70-300 APO G lens. My camera to subject distance is usually between 4 and 6 feet. ISO is normally 800 and f stop of 10-13. I never use a tripod. On cloudy days I like flash with ISO of 200-400. The zoom lens provides amazing sharpness and wonderful bokay. It is the finest I have ever used and I have been at this hobby for over 60 years and have had many fine lenses.

I was in the woods, in a park called, "Stanley Ringer Park" (in Boston, Massachusetts, USA) and I saw briefly, a hawk fly by, and I was no where near my camera on a tripod, and I couldn't see where the hawk went. I have to wonder: how on earth do these people on this forum find such fantastic shots! I only saw a hawk for 2 seconds! And I searched and searched; never to see him again. Never mind pointing a camera at it!!! How do you do it?

I live 2 miles west of the biggest airport in the country, so I just wait for one to land on my backyard fence and fire away with my Sony.

Hello Ladies and Germs,

I have Been taking photos using manual for a short period of time. I guess a couple months now. I went to a wedding this Sat. with our camera. I had a little hope that the skills I have been studying might show up in the photos I captured. Sadly it was an unhappy result. I was not doing this for anyone but my experience. Nobody was counting on me but me. Most all photos taken in auto were satisfactory to Good. Most of the manual focus photos I took were out of focus blurred or otherwise virtually unusable. When in live view the screen looked acceptable for taking but end result was not. I did not use a tripod at all as I did not want to interfere with the real photographer. I believe there was vibration or movement showing in some of the photos but not all and none when in auto. Needless to say I am disappointed that even a modicum of competence was not displayed in my endeavor. Lighting was horrible but not an excuse. Just venting frustration.
Have a good day

You sound like an unfulfilled stand-up failure. I doubt that I would provide you with directions if you were lost in Detroit.

From a standpoint of EXPRESSION, your instincts were spot-on. In candid or causal portraiture, when you see the "look" and the expression you want to capture you shoot and ask questions later. Once you have that expression under you belt, there MAY be time to refine the lighting, pose or whatever else you want to improve upon. Some folks are camera shy or do not easily relax in front of a camera so too much fussing and re-adjusting may never replace a totally natural and lovely expression- like the one you have captured.

It is entirely possible to create classic and extremely elegant portrait with simple light sources- North skylight from a window is one of my favorites. Since we can't move the light source around the subject, we need to move the subject into the desired lighting pattern and create the lighting style that we want. This may entail moving the subject closer or further from the source- closer is softer and further will bring on more contrast. You may have to seat the subject or get them standing in order to control the vertical orientation, that is, like in a studio situation you would be able to move you main light up or does tho control the direction of the shadows. There of course, the lateral potion and the angle at which the light strikes the subject is controlled by turning the subject toward or away form the light source. When you make theses changes, however, the camera position has to be shifted to accommodate the view of the face that you wish photograph- full face,2/3 or profile. You must also coordinate all of this with the background.

Tutorial is being prepared.

Thanks for your comments, Mr. Shapiro. It's really helpful to be married to a woman who is so darned photogenic. I have 57 years worth of photos of her and all are similar. She has a countenance that rarely comes along.

My wife, who is 78, was standing near a glass door. I asked her to "turn this way". My camera was in "mid-soft mode". No flash. I doubt that I would ever be able to duplicate this shot.

Unlimited shot I got this year at the Gold Cup trials in Detroit.

I watched the first Gold Cup race in the late forties. It was won by Guy Lombardo in his Tempo. His main challenger, The California Kid, was the boat that started the true 3 pointer hull. The gas turbines brought the wonderful sound of the Rolls Royce and Allison engines to obscurity. To me, that was the end of the unlimited era.

This boat is considered by many to be the most beautiful Unlimited hydro ever built. It is a one of a kind hull with a one of a kind power plant. It's power comes from two 1710 cubic inch 16 cylinder Allison aircraft engines; used in many ww2 fighter aircraft. Another unique feature of the boat was it's gearbox which coupled the tandem engines to a single drive shaft. I had to shoot the photos through two sets of windows which was necessary to best show most of its 38 feet length. The boat is displayed in Detroit on an island park, Belle isle, which is in the middle of the Detroit River. I hope that you will enjoy this series

About six years ago I made a Bluebird house. Nothing happened for the first year. We had never seen a Blue bird in our neighborhood so I wasn't disappointed. The second year we finally saw a Pair of Bluebirds checking out the house and eventually they began construction of a nest and had two young. Today, after many young had been raised in that house, I counted ten Bluebirds taking turns at the birdbath.

IF YOU BUILD IT, THEY WILL COME.

Thank you my friends. I treasure all of your comments. Our little town is on the western boundary of the Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport and will be unaffected by Hurricane Harvey. Some kinfolks are in the area that is scheduled to receive 30 to 40 inches of rain.

This shot was made with flash, hand held at 300mm fl, distance about 5 ft. Probably the best result I've had with this inch long butterfly.
