This boat is considered by many to be the most beautiful Unlimited hydro ever built. It is a one of a kind hull with a one of a kind power plant. It's power comes from two 1710 cubic inch 16 cylinder Allison aircraft engines; used in many ww2 fighter aircraft. Another unique feature of the boat was it's gearbox which coupled the tandem engines to a single drive shaft. I had to shoot the photos through two sets of windows which was necessary to best show most of its 38 feet length. The boat is displayed in Detroit on an island park, Belle isle, which is in the middle of the Detroit River. I hope that you will enjoy this series
Shooting thru plexi is tough.
Good photos considering the constraints of the physical environment you had to deal with. Thanks for showing them to us along with the information.
I used to watch the race a life time ago, i don't remember the Miss pepsi, looks like the dates on your photos it raced befor my time. I rember miss Budwiser and Pay & Pack among others. you could see alot of diffrent sports on TV back then.

Fantastic shot Fotoatrist.
Thanks. I positioned myself at the famous rooster tail turn on the Detroit river. Been doing this for 20 years. Got it down pat. All I need is good weather. And the hydroplanes of course.

They used to race at Longview Lake in Kansas City. I only got to go once, and didn't have a camera worth taking.

I watched the first Gold Cup race in the late forties. It was won by Guy Lombardo in his Tempo. His main challenger, The California Kid, was the boat that started the true 3 pointer hull. The gas turbines brought the wonderful sound of the Rolls Royce and Allison engines to obscurity. To me, that was the end of the unlimited era.
