Nice shot Revet.

Thanks Karin, I finally got.to try the NDF out. Actually I think that shot was with the CP filter (2 secs exposure). The NDF blurred the leaves out too much because of wind. I am going to try and do Brandywine next weekend.

I was disappointed not being able to make it but I did get over to Berea Falls yesterday and met some local photography buffs. They are part of a Facebook group called Cool Photo Ops and Creative Challenges. I joined yesterday. It looks pretty cool, they do field trips around the area and shoot together.

i have a nikon d750. it has an option to shoot in 1.2 or dx 1.5. will shooting in these modes allow the magnification of a lens without a teleconverter and achieve the same effect without the loss of an f stop and without losing the auto focus?

Like others said, you are just cropping your sensor. I have a similar feature on my D7100 which I only use when I burst shoot to help out the small buffer. I don't think you have that problem on the D750.

I feel your pain. I just went through this ordeal trying to decide whether to stay with my Tamron 18-270 mm or buy a brand new Nikon 18-200 vr ii at a reduced cost from my brother. I borrowed the Nikon lens and shot with both. The nikon lens gave sharper pictures across the zoom range. It was barely noticeable in a normal frame but very noticeable at 1:1. The build quality is night and day with Nikon winning. I decided to buy the Nikon.

Thank you Revet....this is in the Catskill region, and the lake is Sackett Lake. A bit of history.....this lake was the home of one of the Catskill hotels called "The Laurels"...it was the hottest hotel in the Catskills in the late 60's to early 70's.....Like all the hotels those types of hotels in the area, it closed.....the angle of the lake shots is from the ruins of The Laurels....kinda sad.....there is still the remnants of the GIANT outdoor pool they had....I took some shots of that as well..just didn't post....thanks for commenting.
Thank you Revet....this is in the Catskill region,... (show quote)

Before living in Cleveland, I grew up in northern NJ. I remember doing field trips to Catskill Game Farm and then later tubing the Esopus River just north of Kingston.

I have found a wonderful "Old Age" hobby for myself. An outing with some good people to show me some of the ropes you just can't learn reading about would be really good for me. Saturday mornings will never be doable for me though.

Great shots, such a beautiful area. Which one of the many upstate New York lakes is that?? (Tupper, Saranac, Loon, Placid, Cranberry - a few I remember driving from Cleveland to Whiteface)

The Nikon lens is a reliable, well made workhorse. It is almost a permanent resident on my Nikon Camera. At 350 I would go for it! You will not regret it. To compare the two, I would shoot both at 200 (giving Tamron the advantage) and cropped at max (giving Nikon the advantage). I would also pay attention to how they "handle". Very important are the tests for distortion and aberration. (high contrast photos)

Thanks, I will try them both out as you stated and see what I think

I have read all the posts (thanks to all). I have learned how to read MTF charts and I have looked at all the comparisons and reviews in DXO, SLRGear, and dpreview. Now I am more confused than ever!!!

Let me lay out the whole scenario. For now I am going to stick with my D7100 with no plans to go full frame in the near future. I do keep the super zoom on my body 90% of the time, mostly for event photography. I change to primes, macro, etc for planned shots. I am an amateur but I am getting better so I want to put decent glass in front of my body.

I have been using a Tamron 18-270 pzi for 3 years. I find it soft (as are most of the super zooms I have been told). I have the opportunity to pick up a Nikon 18-200 dx diII which has never been used for $350 dollars (from my brother who bought it and upgraded to a full frame 2 days after he got the lens). My question now becomes, is the Nikon 18-200 a significant upgrade from the Tamron to purchase it for $350.

I do like the extra reach of the Tamron which is why I wanted to crop the Nikon 18-200 out to 270 to compare the two.

I originally mentioned I had three lenses. I actually found a Nikon 55-200 kit lens out in the woods which was pretty beat up. I found it to be much sharper than the Tamron which is what started this whole process.

I did it and finally got my D7100, upgraded from my D7000. I have been playing around with it all this past weekend. Asking any of you who have had the D7100 for a while what you think of this camera? I wanted the D7200, but really didn't have the $$ to upgrade to that one yet....

The D7100 is a significant upgrade from the D7000 but the difference between the D7200 and D7100 is not as significant (D7200 has a bigger buffer and is slightly better in low light plus has wifi incorportated (which can be added to D7100). I went for the D7100. In those few instances I want burst shots, I change from RAW to jpeg and I can fire away at will.

I have three lenses I want to compare. They are all telephoto zoom all purpose lenses that I use on a Nikon D7100. I only want to keep one. I won't say which lenses because I am tired of reading about comparisons and have already spent a good bit of time on dpreview. I want to see the differences for myself (maybe I am a control freak!!!).

I can think of tons of shots to set up to compare them but I don't want to spend the next week doing this. What are some standard or lets say "most important types of comparison shots" I should do.

1)Currently, I plan on doing a landscape shot at wide angle and zoom positions on all three at f/8 or so (sweet spot) to compare the best they can do. Then try some high and low f values.

2)The more expensive lens has a shorter reach than the other two so I was going to crop that in post to see how it compares.

3)Low light performance. I have already checked the ability to auto-focus in low light and all three are about the same (even the cheap one) which leads me to believe the D7100 is more important here. I do want to check how the photo's appear though.

4) Some low f value shots to compare Bokeh. Also bokeh on some zoomed shots at highest mm

Any other suggestions or tweaks to the above tests??
