I am currently working on the Sweet Sixteen photos I shot last night, and I am running into a mild quandary...

While cropping, is it better to violate the rule of thirds alignment in order to eliminate background items? Or is there another way to deal with background items and maintain Rule of Thirds?

Thanks for any suggestions you may have.

On a "Sweet Sixteen" photo, you want everything to put attention on the subject. You should be able to choose where the photo is taken, so you should start off with a location having nothing in the background, or anywhere else, that would take attention away from the subject; you don't have to make everything else bland - it just needs to complement the subject. There is no reason to 'fix' an issue in PP when that issue can be prevented when you take the photo.

As it is now, Canon's got EF lenses, and EF-S lenses... and a few EF-M lenses. What we REALLY don't need is EF-M-FF lenses too! They are struggling enough to just building the EF-M series (five + years in development and still only 8 or 9 EF-M lenses? most of which are "kit" quality zooms?), without having to start putting together yet another series of lenses!

Do we know with certainty that the EF-M mount is not useable with FF sensors?

Pentax is the one manufacturer that is openly tepid to MILC; their identity is wrapped up in the pentaprism, and they're having enough trouble releasing new FF lenses people say they need.

I've used red hat linux in the past but came back to windows to use the adobe suite. Especially for video with integrated audio editing, adobe is probably the best.

I don't do video. For stills, I use gimp ... I find it to be just as useful as PhotoShop, and I don't have a reason to complain each month.

Well yes, the Nikon D7500 is essentially a mirrorless camera when using the live view (LCD screen)

But no EVF - harder to use without tripod, virtually impossible to use in sunlight.

First - WELCOME TO UHH!

You can combine the 2 lenses into 1 and not have to change back and forth. The Tamron 18-400mm f/3.5-6.3 Di II VC HLD Lens for Canon EF might suit you. It should be fine with a T7i. A step up is the Canon 80D (7 frames/second). For high speed (~10 frames/second) for sports or birds in flight you should consider the 7D MK II.

The problem with one lens solutions is that they force too many compromises on the designers.

With the possible exception of the first one, all of the images feel too tight to me. I would feel more comfortable if you had left more space around the building in the first place .... but, of course, that is not something you can "fix" at this point.

I had disabled the Windows update on Win 10 64 bit pro. Somehow an automatic update started when I turned of my PC about a week ago. When the system came back on my Canoscan 8000F 4800 dpi document and film scanner driver stopped working. I use that scanner for 120 film slides and negs which many new scanners don't support. Canon didn't update their driver for Win 10. It took me half a day to figure out that their Win8.1 driver could be installed and worked in Win 10. I promptly disabled the Microsoft updating feature again. For a while I thought I needed to buy a new scanner. To me, microsoft updates are more trouble than viruses.

I used to have automatic updates disabled on my Win 8 machine, which is why it was still a Win 8 machine and not a Win 10 machine ... and then it died. I definitely didn't want to purchase a new Windows machine, which would have forced me into Win 10, so our daughter put together a new machine mostly using parts from various donor machines {including memory from our old machine}, and now I am typing this on an Ubuntu Linux machine.

DPReview has published a series of pictures from a tour of the factory where Nikon makes their own glass.

I am sure that Nikon will not have their new mirrorless with the F mount. Canon might keep the EF mount but I doubt it. Canon switched to EF mount because there were significant problem with the FD mount when they moved to AF. The EF mount is now good except for the flange distance is too long for mirrorless but interfacing wise it's fine. Nikon F mount has a lot of incompatibility with body to lens interfacing so I am sure they won't keep it with the new mirrorless.

Nikon has already said they'll be using Z-mount, but right now all we know about it is the name. Canon has already introduced the EF-M mount for cameras such as the M-1 and M-50, but as I indicated above, I don't personally know whether it can handle FF or whether they'll find themselves supporting four mounts at some point.

Incidentally, I was at BestBuy this morning recycling a printer, so I stopped by their camera department. I was very much impressed by the M-50. If I were still a Canon user, I would consider it for my next upgrade if the price would come down a tad. I'm expecting the M-series to completely replace the 'Rebels' in a fairly short period of time.

Ok I know a DSLR has a mirror by definition but couldn't all the features of mirrorless be embedded in a DSLR? (Evf may be an issue)
Reason i ask is I would like a FF DSLR that has the features of mirrorless but take my lenses natively. Like the body size of dslr also.
Would like the option of evf but not a deal breaker....thoughts?

From my perspective, the main advantages of MILC are EVF and CDAF .... both require that light hit the sensor 'at all times', so they require being in LiveView mode.

Canon may have it easier than most, lens control is totally electronic. You basically need to get the electronic signal from the mirrorless mount via an adapter so the body talks to the lens. That is the easy bit creating the evf interface and passing information to it, will be harder.

Mirrorless lens will not be restricted to current eos protocols as long as the body can tell the difference.

more tricky are lenses that use in body focus motors, probably would need to be in the adapter.

Canon already has the EF-M mount and an adapter that enables all existing EF mount lenses to be fully used. I'm not sure of the specs, though, in particular whether it would accommodate FF.

OP used the words 'First Communion'; those words usually go with 'worship service', which conventionally goes with the words 'no flash'.

Sony has a menu setting for noise reduction and when it is on the camera will take several second to process the pic info to create that image.

Shouldn't NR processing be applied to images in the buffer?? I would expect that to slow the camera down only when the buffer is full.

Now i can see that it will take some experimenting for me to work out what I ideally want in terms of FOV, the fastness of the glass, the apertures' influence on image, and as you said, to what extent I'm forced to compromise on these things by price!
Thanks for helping me to understand enough of a more complex subject than I'd realized

Yes, there is very little you can learn from theory here. Take lenses out into 'the field', see what each does through the viewfinder, take some pictures, and 'study' the results back home. Experience is the best source of understanding.

Camera motion is treated with IS, but subject motion can only be treated with a combination of larger sensor size and higher shutter speed.

The thing missed by most participants in this discussion is that subject motion is just as bad as camera motion - and Image Stabilization does nothing to 'fix' subject motion.
