I would recommend back light. That means on a tripod in daylight when the outside light is coming through the glass.

Good Luck and enjoy.

I found that using an external hard drive works best for me. I keep all my files and data on an external.

As most of us have experienced, computers like to crash and need to be restored, at times from the ground up. With an external drive there's no effect if the computer crashes and I've been keeping photos on an external for several years with no loss at all.

Having experienced the loss of everything before that was on my C:\, I now use two externals. My main keeps all my data, my second is for back up only for material that's very important to me.

Good Luck.

As suggested above time exposure. On a tripod try 2-seconds in normal room light first. I would suggest that you stand the camera a few feet away and zoom to the photo.
That will minimize any camera reflection in the glass. You will see reflection from around the room though and that's the only drawback. If you try this use your camera's
10-second timer because even you pressing the shutter release will cause camera movement and blur.

Good Luck

There's many subtle things about photography that dslr cameras allow you to take advantage of. Don't expect to be making "wonderful" photos over night because it doesn't happen that way.

Subtle things like walking on a scene, looking at the light, deciding what you want to do with your settings then setting them and shoot. At times I'm required to make those decisions on the spot, at times I have an advance look at the scene. Which ever those decisions will come quickly and naturally once you are familiar and comfortable with your gear.

Good luck. The t3i is an excellent camera and you'll enjoy it.

A scam indeed. The only thing these people want is your credit card number - run!

If you ever have questions about any on line store you can always check them out here.
http://www.resellerratings.com/

These folks rate on line stores based on actual customer experience. If these people don't know anything about the site in question or their rating isn't above 9 I'd run.

Most of us who use on line stores, at least the pros and
semi pros I've talked with use either B&H or Amazon.

Good luck

I use Fast Stone and since it's a free program what's the big deal with getting it and trying it out. Figure that out when you get it.

For me it was having owned Canon film cameras, liking them and then buying Canon just seemed natural to me. But in the research I did I also found out what I wrote earlier about where the auto focus motor and the IS are located.
That made a difference to me because if they are in the body and they break down - the entire camera has to go in for repair where in my case only the lens needs repair. It was a thought because electronic devices, regardless of initial quality to break down from time to time.

I do agree with CocoRoger - research your products and know as much as you can before you buy. He's also correct about VR - Vibration Reduction in Nikon or IS - Image Stabalization in Canon at times being in the Nikon bodies.
Canon always puts this feature in the lens. They also always put the focus motor in the lens and for me that's best.

He's also correct this isn't a brand competition and he and I can still be friends - tee... hee, even if we prefer different brands of cameras.

Best of luck. Jim

I agree with CocoRoger in that pick what suits you best.
I chose my Canon system simply because it suited me better.

However I do like the fact that all of the EF and EF-S lenses, used by the Rebel line, all have the focus motors in the lens, not the body. Some Nikon cameras have it in the body and then you need some kind of push rod to focus the lens... not for me.

Tea8... you make an excellent point but, as a retired videographer doing television news / sports I can tell you that the law reads that if your on public property you can photograph anything that's visible from that location. So, that means that if a passer by can look at it then you can photograph it. That doesn't take good taste into account of course but it's the way it is.

That also means that when I would be asked to go to this house or that because something was doing with the owner, as long as I was standing on a sidewalk or the street, I could shoot away. If there were kids or people in the yard I probably wouldn't until they'd gone inside but that's just good taste - get my meaning? If a passer by can see that house from where I'm standing, I can take shots of it.

Those law suits you mention, did they ever sue a TV station? Probably not because guys like me wouldn't take shots of people so they could be recognized.

It's really a matter of taste. The laws on such things are pretty specific from state to state so it's then up to the photographer, photo journalist or videographer to exercise that good taste.

Merry Christmas

Oh I know it is legal so long as you are on public property. I know cops aren't supposed to be able to stop you if you are on public property as well. Someone just made the comment that some cops seem to feel an exaggerated sense of power by trying to stop people from doing so; and I was just trying to point out maybe the cops are trying to stop people because the feel they have the wrong intentions for taking pics.

Good point tea8 - good point. You're right of course because during my shooting days I was asked several times to stop. When I mentioned that I was standing on the public sidewalk or street - the officer usually smiled and backed off.

Of course then I was in a position of being the employee directed to get shots of this or that... and the officer always knew that going in.

Hey azredwinger - welcome. I'm in Phoenix and love it here.
I only recommend what I own and know. I have two Canon dslr cameras and they're both excellent so you may want to consider this company as well.

Good luck and have fun. Merry Christmas and again, welcome.

laskalass: I'd suggest some serious reading on various sites to learn all that dslr cameras can do if you know how to properly control them... it's quite a bit but with lots of learning and experimentation you'll get there... but you have to work at it to really learn.

Good Luck
