In a previous post I discussed the results that I got from testing a Nikon DX AF-S Nikkor 55-300mm 4.5-5.6 G ED VR lens. After completing that series of tests I decided to do the same using the Nikon DX VR AF-S Nikkor 18-55mm 3.5-5.6 GII lens that came with my Nikon D3300 camera. My conclusions for the tests of these two lenses are:

(1) The Nikkor 55-300 is a decent lens that does a fairly good job considering what it cost. Properly used it can produce pictures that while not tack sharp are good enough for enlargements up to 5 X 7. If cost is a factor then this lens is well worth consideration. However, if you can afford the extra cost I would recommend that you opt out for a better quality lens.

(2) The Nikkor 18-55 GII lens may be a kit lens but it sure doesn't act like it. The sharpness of the lens is astounding inasmuch as it came with the camera at little additional cost. It may not achieve the sharpness of a prime lens but it will sure give it a run for its money. I had expected that the results of the test would be similar to what I got with the 55-300mm. But such was not the case. If only the 55-300mm was as sharp as the 18-55mm tested. Note: the lens that I tested was the GII, not the older G model that is still on some of the 3000 and 5000 series cameras being sold today.

Happy shooting and for those just getting into using a DSLR or are on a limited budget the Nikon D3300 combined with the 18-55mm GII lens is one hell of a combination that IMHO can't be beat.

I'm guessing you had the latest firmware upgrade to your D3300 camera to be able to use the 18-55mm GII lens. The D5500 was included in that firmware upgrade too.

Perhaps a tripod, protective camera case, external flash unit, extra battery, SD cards, or a remote shutter unit, and whatever you think is needed. $125 dollars is not a lot of money these days. If you don't have a tripod, you should buy one. The Panasonic FZ1000 is an excellent fixed lens camera.

Going to the Valley of Fire in Nevada in a couple weeks. It is going to be extremely bright during the day but we plan to stay past sunset. I only own a couple of kit lenses for my D3200. An 18-55 and a 55-200 neither of which have VR. Looking for suggestions on what to use in this situation. I will probably rent them for this trip.

Those are the same two kit lenses that come with the D3300, which will be discontinued later this year. Add a 35mm prime lens later. Your present lenses are just fine. Use them.

The Nikon D5 will be available for the Olympics and upcoming College/NFL games. The Canon 1DXii is still on pre-order and may be MIA for these upcoming events.

You're just talking about one MLB game. Go to a Major College football or NFL game and you will see plenty of white lenses attached to a Canon 1DX and black lenses attached to a Nikon D4(s).

Be sure to bring a clear protective covering for your camera. Water is not a friend to digital cameras.

A couple of years ago she asked me for a camera. I bought her a phone with a half way decent camera in it. She loved it and took some really great photos. Now she wants a 'real' camera that can make prints 8x10 and that she can change the settings. I was thinking a Nikon DL 24-500. She is twenty, National Honor Roll, and understands composition, settings etc.

What are your thoughts?

The Nikon DL 24-500 is an excellent choice. Not cheap though, $1000. Won't have to worry about buying interchangeable lenses, and a camera you can use anywhere. Another would be a brand new Canon SX60,16 megapixels, 1355mm focal length $460. Happy hunting.

The two classic portrait lenses for 35mm were 105 and 135, and I mean primarily head shots or maybe waist up. I use an 85 on my DX camera for head shots, which puts it in the range, and I think a 50 would be shorter than I like.

Agree. I owned the 135mm prime lens on a film camera a long time ago. Loved it.

As previously said, have them to make an offer. Have in mind what you want monetarily. The offer may be higher than what you want or lower. Negotiate if lower and see what happens. If they really want your photos, they will compromise. A few extra dollars paid is not going to put them in bankruptcy.

Cute kids and you did great. I coached 5-7 year old boys soccer some 25 years ago. It was sometimes difficult for them to follow instructions. But they were competitive. And the games were funny too, slipping, sliding, bumping and falling. I really enjoyed them. Those kids are all grown up now. Loved your photos. Do it again.

NOT WOW.. Come on guys, those images have nothing to do with camera, but composition and post processing. They are grossly over saturated and over processed. The granite walls are not blue nor should they have a magenta color cast. I see blown out highlights and dark shadows everywhere. I get the same wow feeling when I see a 5-year-old Crayola's.

Regardless, it is still a great camera. B&H has this camera on backorder because it is selling like hotcakes. I will agree with you that PP was done to enhance those photos.

Downtown Cleveland that includes a Civil War Memorial, Browns Stadium, Quickens Loans Arena, Indians Baseball Stadium, and many venues along the Lake Erie shoreline. The West Side is interesting to see too. I would suggest taking a tour bus like it did. Or rent a cheap car. Cleveland will be recovered from the Republican Convention by the time you get there. Food is good too and not expensive. And don't forget the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame. As mentioned. Enjoy your trip.

For me as an athlete you have got to be crazy to participate in that country. The water venues would hold a special danger.

There have been reports of outrageous robberies of tourists on the beaches in daylight hours, open drug dealings, water contamination, and the Zika Virus. Tourists renting cars there are warned to be careful of wandering anywhere in the cities.

I give a Wow #2. Incredible camera with Zeiss fixed lens. At $1500 a pop, this qualifies as an all in one camera to take anywhere. This is way above any fixed lens camera on the market today. It has up to 600mm focal length too. I would love to own this one, but I am yearning for another lens for my DSLR.
