On October 31, I fully succumbed to a GAS attack and I purchased my new EOS R. It is beautiful, I Love it, and the price had been recently dropped from $2300 to $1800, so it seemed like a good time to buy. Bought the camera, the adapter and the (new) Canon warranty. Oh, and I bought all this at Normans Camera in Kalamazoo, MI. The guy told me I was also buying a new printer - I said I absolutely do not have room for a new printer, and he TOLD me I was buying the new printer - a PIXMA Pro 10 and he was going to sell it to me, and he was going to throw in 50 sheets of 13 X 9 Canon Luster paper, all for $350. And, he completed and handed to me the paper work for a $350 rebate, so the printer he foced me to buy was free - with ink and paper!

Part 2

In December, Canon dropped the price $300 on the EOS R and added the adapter back into the price! instead of $1800, it was now $1500! If I had only waited!

Well, Yesterday, we were in Kalamazoo (its 50 miles from us) and I told the wife I was going to stop into Normans to say "Hi"; and maybe ask a question or two....

20 minutes later, I left the store with $300 going back into my Credit Card!

I have maintained here before that the local photography store can compete with the big boys - I have proved it again. I don't believe the Printer deal would be available at Amazon, and I don't think that most stores would rebate the price difference (a) after 30 days, and (b) when they do not have to look into your eyes.

So, no I did not get screwed, I was taken very good care of by a local camera store that has battled the big boys for 62 years. If you are ever in Kalamazoo - or Grand Rapids - stop in to Normans and say hello the the good folks there. If you can't get there, Normans sells on line at the same prices as the big boys - always have, and they include service at no additional cost.

Support your Local Camera Store - They will always return the support for your needs!

Merry Christmas, Friends.

I hope they did not have to eat that $300.00 just so you would have a good day. You may have helped decrease the bottom line of your local store and help contribute to there eventual closing.

I am thinking of purchasing either a Nikon dx 18-55 vr and a 55-300 vr or an 18-300 vr. While I like the idea of one lens, I don’t want to sacrifice image quality. I am a hobbiest, not a professional. I mostly use my camera while traveling and take a wide variety of pictures. Any help would be appreciated. I would be pairing the lenses with either a D5600 or a D7500. Thanks

The 18-55, 55-300 are considered kit lenses. But, that said, they are very sharp. Most lenses made in the past 20 years are sharp. A LOT depends on the photographer, not the lens.
The 18-300 is more expensive and heavier to carry around all day compared to the 55-300. There is a price to pay for more coverage with the 18-300.
You may really want to get the feel of both lenses on your D5600 to see what you think.

Hi and happy holidays to my friends here on UHH. I don't post here often but I do lurk a lot, so I wanted to start out with something positive before I start my rant.
Several years ago, I heard on UHH that Abes of Maine was a good reputable camera store, but I had never dealt with them before. Fast forward to Dec. 12. I was looking for a new camera online and noticed that Abes of Maine, (who I have reason think is actually in New Jersey, if so, just another thing he lies about), had a Canon 90D on sale for about $100 less that everyone else. Their website led me to believe that this was the exact same, brand new 90D I would get if I went to my usual favorite stores, (Adorama & B&H). So I bought it. Within 5 minute I get a call from a fast-talking salesman from Abe's trying to sell me a warranty, a memory card and God knows what else. When I questioned the need to purchase a warranty on a brand new camera, it was only then that I became aware that I had purchased a Gray Market Camera! Now I know some people like to save some money and think that gray market is just fine. After all it is the same exact camera, just without a manufacturers warranty. So if that's what you want, Abe's has it, but they just don't like to talk about it, or the fact that they are not even a Canon authorized dealer! To my way of thinking, that is a deceptive way to do business, and so I immediately told the guy to cancel the sale. He responded by saying that he would 'Upgrade my purchase" by giving me a legit Canon USA camera with full USA warranty, plus a memory card that retails for something like $160 and only charge me an additional $79.00 for the entire deal. He convinced that me this was not a gray market camera, so I said okay. Right after I hung up, I had a bad feeling about this.
The following Monday the package comes. I open the package and find the camera packed in a box that originally included a kit lens, but the lens was removed. I take out the camera, go online to Canon's website to register that camera, and found out that they sold me a gray market camera after all.
I repacked the camera and got on the phone to Abe's of Maine.
After talking to no less than 7 people as I was passed around from one person to another and to voicemail, I finally got someone to help me.
I explained the situation to her no less than 3 times and asked her to send me a shipping label for the return. She said she could not promise that, but would try. Obviously she did not try hard enough, because now it cost me $30.85 to return this item because their salesman lied to me at the time of purchase!!!
Anyway, I sent it back at my own expense, and learned my lesson. From now on I will only buy cameras and the like from Adorama or B&H. Meanwhile, although they sent me an email stating they have issued a refund, as of this moment, my card has not be credited. I was hoping to get that credit in time for me to place an order from Adorama and receive my new camera in time for the holidays. That is not going to happen. If I don't get the refund soon I will file a claim with the credit card company. I would have done that already, but the CC company suggested I wait and give them a chance to do right.
This was supposed to be my xmas present from my girlfriend, so I guess it will eventually be a New Years present, or maybe easter or Yom Kippur! I'll have to wait.

Most credit cards are about a month behind on charging. Like mine, if I charge say on the 22 of December, I will not have to pay that bill until February cause the closing date on my card was December 21st for my January bill. Check your card to see when the closing date is. And, I would also call your card company and explain what happened with Dishonest Abe and see what they think the timeline will be to see your refund. Usually a refund happens in no more than a couple of days. Dishonest Abe's could be holding on to your original purchase to gain interest on it.
If you had read any of the posts here on Dishonest Abe's you could have saved yourself some trouble's.

I have just received a Nikon 500 PF lens and have noticed a clicking noise when VR engages and disengages. I have noticed this on some other Nikon lenses, but wondered if anyone else experiences it on the 500 PF. It’s a fairly expensive lens so want to make sure it’s a normal part of the VR operation.

RELAX, this is quite normal. When my VR is off, I get just the focusing system noise, when I switch to VR, there is a clicking noise, this is the normal sound of the VR system working.
I very rarely use the VR on any of my telephoto lenses since I commonly shoot at 1/1000 sec. or higher so I do not need VR.
But, again, relax, all is well with your lens. And, I shoot my 500 PF off my D850 and D500. You are really going to enjoy it's sharpness.
Below is a grab shot at about 70 feet with the D850, Green Heron.

Thanks. I'm still undecided as I have the Tamron SP 24-70 G2 and the 70-200 G2. Both are fast at f/2.8 but I rarely shoot wide open at the upper end. I've had both of these lenses for about a year, but due to some health issues in 2019, neither has more than 500 shots on them. The major camera reseller are willing to give 50% which I guess isn't bad.

You will get MUCH more selling them here or on ebay. Here there is no fee, ebay would be around 10%.

I was wondering if anyone has used this lens. I have a Tamron 24-70 G2 f/2.8 a 70-200 f/2.8. I find that I use the 35-150 range a lot more.

I know that this new lens has variable aperture but I can't shoot much wide open at the 150-200 range. I do mostly macro and street photography. I'm looking to lighten my kit as I have back problems. I was wondering if anyone has this new lens and your experience with it

I am aware of that. The Sigma 50-500, however, was nicknamed the Bigma when it came out. Although the Nikon 200-500 has a good range, it's not quite the same as the 50-500, and "Bigma" also referred to its size. My globe trotting friend used the Bigma for years and years before finally upgrading to the Sigma 150-600 Contemporary model.

So, does that mean a much smaller zoom from Sigma could be called a smallma.

They make a 200-500 5.6 that has been very well received by customer/user reviews. An awesome price right now too.

I just bought a Canon EOS 7D Mark II a couple of months ago. I love the camera but there is one issue that is annoying. When I am shooting in full manual mode, I have noticed the shutter speed on the camera will change on its own. Has anyone had an issue with this happening and if so, what is the solution? Thank you.

You are not in Manual, you are in S priority.

I am wondering, is anyone who is retired or of retirement age, making money by just selling prints, greeting cards or other type of image sales, (locally or online) in order to supplement your income, whatever that might be. That is where my interests lies. No weddings, events or clients. I don’t want to deal with those kind of hassles in my retirement. I just want to make some extra cash doing what I love.

Retired, but not tired, I do about one show a year up North and sell prints, I also sell greeting cards to local Northern businesses.
I do not do it to supplement my retirement, I do it because I enjoy photography as a hobby after almost 38 years of professional photography.

I'm getting older. I don't like it but I admit it. I am currently using a Canon 1DXII and a 5Div. I love the 5Div, in particular, but I'm looking for lighter weight cameras with which to travel, but which will give me the quality to which I am accustomed. Sony? Olympus? I would like a camera with great frames per second because I like to shoot birds. Perhaps a micro four-thirds for extra reach with lenses, but would I be giving up too much?

Most mirrorless camera's with a lens are not that much lighter than some models of current DSLR's.
For example, the Nikon D3500 is actually lighter than many of todays mirrorless camera bodies.

I am well aware of the arguments regarding UV/clear filters to protect a lens. I don't want to jinx myself, but I have been involved with photography for over 60 years and have never had a cracked, scratched, or other form of damaged from of a lens. So you can understand that I am biased by the fact that even the most expensive filters, and who says that they are necessarily better than the least expensive ones, are placing another piece of glass in front of the lens that I prefer to use to take a photo. I checked with my personal property insurance carrier and they told me that damage from dropping a lens, etc., will be covered by them as well.

I am going on a safari in February and was told, by many, that it is very dusty and to carry 2 camera bodies so I don't need to change lenses. I bought a second body. Now I was told to wrap the camera and lens in a scarf when not shooting, so I got a bit worried about sand, dust, etc., sand blasting the front of the lens.

I started listening to u-tubes about the discussion of filters and various people's discussions about quality and price. When looking for a UV/clear glass filter I noticed that Tiffen, which was really a leader in filter manufacturing in the 1960s, still seems to have filters for sale, at this time. I found some of my old Tiffen filters from the 1960s and they look just great. They new Tiffen filters are far less expensive then other manufacturers' brands. I was surprised to find that they actually claim they make their filters in the USA. I took the chance and ordered one for my lower and one for my upper zoom lenses. I have polaroid filters for other lenses that I will be taking as well, so all of my lenses should be protected.

I just wondered if anyone has had any good or bad experiences with their filters?

Filters, used correctly, work well. I have found Tiffen filters work as well as many brands that cost much more.
