Auto focus stopped working
I have found many camera shops to complain about Sigma service and warranties. No one seems to complain about initial quality. So, if you are unsure which brand to buy this is certainly something to consider. Nonetheless, knowing this issue, I own several Sigma lenses and have had several in the past. I have a couple for my Sony a6000 and a couple for my full-frame Nikons. One of the full framers is a 180mm macro lens. I have had it a long time and although not used very often I have been extremely happy with the images it allows me to obtain. This was bought used, btw. I like ‘em, but am aware of Sigma’s reputation on warranties, etc. Generally, I stick with the Nikon line lenses. They seem well made and have never had a Nikon lens need repair. Good luck w/your problem. Btw, I had problems with some older Tamron zooms. Tamron was outstanding in how they handled my out of warranty claim. They also provide a pretty long warranty period. I have also found Sony to be wonderful in totally rebuilding my a6000 twice; the first during the warranty period, the second well after its’ expiration!
No cost either time! Try that with Sigma, Canon, or Nikon, for that matter. Betcha results will be a lot different.
Product loyalty is a powerful thing, is it not?
Happy Holiday
What does all of this have to do with auto focus on my Sigma 50-500.
I have some Sigma lens from a while back. I have only had trouble with one. Sent it to NY and they repaired it quickly. Another time I needed a mount change. They did it at no charge even though it was way out of warranty. BTW you can only swap canon/sigma mounts with out having to make substantial changes which I doubt they would do at no charge.

Call Sigma. They know more about their own lenses than anyone here does.
Looking around the net, aside from the motor going, this popped up a couple of times.
"I have had this problem with my old Sigma 50-500 mm lens, the locking switch became sticky, the barrel got stiff, then the autofocus stopped working."
His solution:
"Sent it back to Sigma, a screw had come loose in the locking switch, which caused the barrel to get stiff and mess the auto focus up."

I got a Bigma probably 15 years ago. The autofocus was always slow. Finally got a Nikkor 200-500 and the Bigma sits on the shelf.

I didn't know Nikon lenses were 100% immune from failure. I have spent several thousand dollars over the years with Nikon Service in Melville, that kinda contradicts your premise . . . In fact, I have, or have had, a number of Sigma lenses, including the 50-500. I fell while carrying it, Sigma charged me $90 to repair it. I still had trouble with it afterwards, and they took it back and put another good amount of work into getting it right - including replacing the AF drive because it was squealing - at no additional charge. I can say that I have had a similar level of customer service from Nikon and Tamron. I question how you arrived at your conclusion. I've been a Nikon user since 1967.
